The thing Ramsay has against him is Father Time, he's 25 in October so needs to push on soon to stake a claim at a Prem team, if that's his ceiling
25! Imagine being that old. In our favour, if he stays with us he’ll soon be able to use his freedom pass on public transport.

Am I off the mark thinking Ramsey’s potential can’t be far short, if at all, of what Gomez was showing at the same stage in his career.
Joe was playing in the Premier and Europe at Kayne's age and Ramsey has just played the one game in the Championship.

You joke, but most clubs nowadays in the Premier League are looking for younger and younger players to sign, develop and sell on at a higher fee. If someone signs Ramsay next summer when he's almost 26, on a 3 or 4 year deal, they might be ok, but leave it another year after that and suddenly there's no resell value

Deserved the win today. Better chances and seemed like they were time wasting from about 60 mins which first game of the season against a newly promoted side is a bit strange.

Carey impressed me the most of the new signings. Everywhere, physical and good on the ball. Bell looked good but perhaps has a tendency to overplay it. He does that thing with his hips that makes the man marking him think he's going backwards but then actually he nips in front. 99 times it'll work but the one time it doesn't he'll look a fool and get pelters. Apter looks perfect for that RWB role ;)

Kelman struggled against physical CBs whilst TC managed to find a way to stretch them. We looked a lot better once Leaburn came on. Think Charlie needs a more physical partner.

    Harvey fucking Knibbs.

    Are we actually quite good?!

This is actually a really interesting point. PL sides seem to want these 20-22yr CBs that are athletic freaks and excellent on the ball in the main. I still think Ramsay has the celling to play that level but it would probably be a move next summer off of a strong season

You are a mile off. Ramsey is 24. Joe Gomez was 18, when he looked like the finished article for us.

Yeah I thought Ramsey was younger.

What a win and what a noise at the end. Defence was fucking amazing.

Only grumble was Kelman looked dog shit.
Only just got back to Broadstairs, so a bit behind the thread.
Kelman didn't set the game alight but he wasn't shit. The service to him definitely was shit though. What's the point of pumping the ball in the air to him?
You can only pass him the ball based on where he is. His positional play today was atrocious. He stood with his back to goal and allowed the ball to come to him which meant the defender could take a run up behind him and bump him off it. He received enough balls to feet to do something with it but he was static and easily dominated. He never came deeper, ran towards the ball or pulled wide into the channels. TC, Leaburn and Olaofe all moved for the ball when they were on and showed more than him in a moment than he offered all game. I'm sure he'll improve but he was really poor today, needs to bring himself into the game if it's not coming to him or he'll end up a very lonely boy.

    Negatives:
Doc and Coventry looked nervy until about an hour in. Seemed they thought they’d get less time on the ball than they actually got. Some rushed and misplaced passes.
TC’s build up play was pretty good but my god his short passing was woeful. At least four times a simple ten yard pass was poorly delivered.

    Positives:
Defensively we were very good. Individually and collectively some really strong performances.
Apter’s running and delivery were impressive and Carey made some great runs from midfield.
Subs all had an impact. Leaburn and Tanto caused all sorts of problems
Set piece delivery was pretty spot on. Nice to have that on our armour this season.

Loved the atmosphere, togetherness, spirit and work ethic. What a great day!

I thought apart from a couple of loose passes, that Doc was really good today and was better than Coventry, although Coventry always seems to end the game strong

A great day and we could hardly have scripted a better return to Championship football.

We had to give up a lot of possession to Watford, who moved the ball well and looked strong and athletic. They did, however, lack punch up top and we worked their goalie far more than they did Kaminski, who was largely a spectator, save for his dithering at the end which could have cost us the match.

Watford had a few dangerous moments, a couple self-inflicted by Charlton, but in addition to their goalie’s three or four saves, Apter whipped two good efforts just wide and I thought we edged a closely-fought game.

Watford only managed one shot on target - a tame free-kick straight to Kaminski - and one clear opportunity when their player headed over when a cross cleared Bell. That reflected some very good defending from the usual suspects, Jones, Ramsey and Edwards. The latter was up against a tricky winger in Baah but largely subdued him and Baah was eventually hooked in the second half.

Our midfield and forwards were a little subdued, although the 3 attacking substitutes, Leaburn, Olaofe and Knibbs, all made a significant difference and we put some real heat on Watford in the closing stages. Pure ecstasy when His Knibbs thrashed the ball home from Jones’ header back at the far post.

An ideal start and it was great to see a bigger crowd and the benefit that will bring to the local economy as well as the club. One thing that could usefully be addressed is getting passengers off the platform at Charlton station from packed trains rather more quickly than at a snail’s pace.

The win will do the squad the world of good, given the relative lack of Championship experience. I also enjoyed Nathan Jones winding up the Watford supporters at the end and the jostling which followed between the players.

I’m sure that some of the lads who didn’t play will get minutes on Tuesday against Stevenage and we’ll also hopefully see a bit of Fullah in a competitive game.

Miles off. Gomez had won the premier league and champions league by 24.

Perhaps change your taste in larger....might make you smile more.
Talking about larger, why are the available shirts in the shop XL, 2XL, 4XL ??? Who the fuck orders all that size ? Billy Bunter ?
I got a 3XL, and found it a tad snug.
  • Great result
    Fantastic noise for the goal.
A bit disappointed with the attendance - thought it would be 23k+.

Given the posts the comms team have been putting out bigging up that there was going to be an attendance greater than the 21,675 of 16 years ago for the first home game of the season it’s just as well they did beat it, even if was by just a narrow margin…

  • Great win and unlike the 1-0 wins at the beginning of last season, we looked genuinely good for large patches.

All new recruits looked good, as did most of last seasons team.

TC needs a bit more finesse, but he did it in league one, I'm sure he'll figure out the next step up.

Greg Docherty was a bit off the pace, I reckon give it a few more games though as he has a lot of qualities which help at this level.

    Fantastic result!

what a bench we have! Great options.

Bell good defensively but does worry me with ball at feet. Isnt this what the luton fans told us about?

thought campbell was unlucky today, looked a threat, just couldn't get his passing right.

Leaburn frightened the life out of their defence. Pray he stays fit

apter looks like he’s gonna be top

We got lucky with some of the Watford finishing.
But we showed endeavour and determination. Apter was an absolute revelation, all the team put in a proper shift.
The East Stand Lino was well off the pace and the referee looked like he was getting ready for a Mr Universe contest in the Excel centre.

But we were well worth the win.

Back on Tuesday hope for another great performance.

Well done to us, quite at times but picked it when needed.

Bizarre conversation with a Watford fan on the train. I said I thought we deserved to win. He said, ‘If you think you deserved to win that then you’re in for a long hard season’. I tried to make sense of that but I couldn’t. I said, ‘Not only did we score, but we worked your goalie several times’.
Him: ‘Shots on target mean nothing in this league. Wait till you play the top teams. Wait till you play Leeds’
Me: ‘Leeds are in the premier league, mate’.
Him: ‘Okay then, Sheffield United. They don’t even need shots on target’.
Me: ‘Well presumably they need at least one’.
Him: ‘No. That’s the thing. They don’t’.

Unfortunately we arrived at London Bridge then, so I never got to find out how the top teams are so good that they don’t need shots on target to win games.

The Blades are losing 4-1 🤔

Great afternoon, last minute winners always the best.  Some decent football played and the players already gelling and playing the NJ way.  Thought Leaburn looked excellent when he came on and TC had their defense panicking throughout. The Watford number 5 should have been booked for his tackle on Edwards right at the start and would then have been off by 20 mins or whatever when he did his second poor challenge.

I took 3 non Charlton fans with me and they had a wonderful afternoon.

Knibbs is going to have a big season, Carey and Apter looked excellent, Olaofe was big and strong when he came on.  Bell calm.  Ramsey, Edwards and Jones carried in where they left off last season.  Didn't click for Kelman but you could see the ability.  Doc and Coventry struggled for me.

    UTA.

The Valley looks amazing in the sun when almost full.
