Curbishley Stand turnstiles

It seems that all the investment around the ground hasn't extended to getting all the turnstiles working. Ridiculous queues before the game.

Yep. Four not working. I didn’t go through my lucky turnstile, hence why we lost.

Nice to see the maintenance department have put signs in the toilets saying if you find a maintenance issue please report it to the nearest steward. Time to put up these signs but not actually attend to a maintenance issue currently into its fourth season, no lock on trap three in the bogs. Ironic really.
  • There were six out of nine working. A seventh opened about 12.10, probably with a handheld reader although I was inside by then waiting for someone. There were large queues before midday.

I know some people walked round to the Bartram Gate to ensure they got in on time.

It does seem odd that they can’t open all the turnstiles. They will have repair them eventually after all.
  • Wouldn’t mind, the stand isn’t even two thirds full
  • A couple weren't working for the North stand either but they had a person with a scanner there to mitigate somewhat. That wouldn't have happened previously, so as long as it's not a regular thing then that's fine.
  • Was a complete joke. I had to pretend I was going into the family stand in order to jump the queue. Absolute nightmare!
  • Slepped round to the Bartram entrance which has no functioning turnstiles but does have guys with hand held scanners. There were zero queues

It was a question during the Meet the Directors Q & A.

The Bartram entrance is shabby in the extreme but fans can use it easily.

That doesn't mean the club shouldn't have all the other turnstiles operational, that should be the minimum.
  • Went up to Bartram Gate too
  • Last season I remember being let in via the gate using a hand held reader.  I was quite surprised that wasn't done today.
  • Did anyone have a problem with season tickets not scanning? Have heard of a few cases.

Queue was pretty bad and the club needs to sort those broken turnstiles out before the next league game.

Some sort of queueing system for the East Stand concourse bars wouldn't go amiss either. Have them run parallel to the Stand in an attempt to stop the queue snaking back across the whole walkway.

One for "British Rail" or whatever they are called now; get some more card readers installed on Charlton Station (can be on the platform or outside or both). It's taking ages to touch in or out. Fair play, they opened an extra gate to let pre-paid and freebies through but that only helped a tiny amount. Kent-bound platform was barely clear from one train to the next pre-match. Post-match is too much of a scrum too.

I haven’t used the Bartram Gate to come in, but I am surprised at the lack of attention to its use as an exit. Lansdowne Mews, which has been narrowed by the development of land the club sold, is heavily parked on matchdays. I’m not entirely sure if this is residents or fans/staff exploiting the lack of parking control.

Fans and vehicles from the ground are allowed to leave at same time, with the cars having to weave to avoid the ones parked up, all in a narrow space. Even if nothing can be done about the parked cars in the Mews, I think the cars from inside the ground need to be held back. Nobody appears interested in taking responsibility.
  • Many of the parked cars are fans as there are nothing like that many on non-match days.

As I sit in the Curbs Stand I always use this exit and it is well used by others after the game.

The main "crunch" point is when the cars turn into Charlton Lane.

Yesterday Leicester fans were being turned away as they thought they could access the JS Stand that way due to the maps on their tickets which is their fault not the club's.

If I was 40 years younger, and dishonest, it would be simple to skip pass the stewards and lose myself in the crowd.

There seemed a lot of lost Leicester fans yesterday, more than usual.

It's pretty obvious how to get to the JS if you're walking from the station, especially as they now have a big sign pointing the way, but if you've come by car and are walking to The Valley from side streets, I can see why they might go to the wrong entrance.

Some of the parking available is likely taken by stewards and people working at the ground, who obviously get there before most fans.

i’m not sure why the parking isn’t controlled - possibly the road is unadopted, which would preclude the council from interfering.

At the least, however, the club should hold back the cars leaving the ground until the majority of people have left the vicinity on foot. That is a proper matter for the safety advisory group. I agree about the conflict on Charlton Lane.

Did anyone have a problem with season tickets not scanning? Have heard of a few cases.
Getting my new digital season ticket to "read" under the scanner is quite cumbersome.
Keeping it still and precisely under the reader doesn't work, you have to move it about a bit before it "reads"
It was much smoother last season using my season ticket card.
Edit. I should probably mention I am using the West Stand turnstiles not the Curbs Stand as in thread title

Thanks. I actually know a couple of people whose cards didn’t work at all - seemingly cancelled. CAST will raise with the club this week - interested to understand the extent of it.

These are in the remit of the Chief Operating Officer at the football club to make sure that everything is working order before a match, however unless someone can tell me, I have no idea who is responsible for that job role

Are there any middle managers in place at the football club?
  • Ed Warrick is COO and Jon Blythe is operations manager.

Then they are both responsible for what happened yesterday then and making sure that scenario didn’t happen
  • 3 weeks to the next home game. Enough time to sort the turnstiles out.

They were doing this about 5 minutes before kick-off, ushering people from the turnstiles to the main gate.

They weren't doing this while I was in the queue for the turnstiles, hence I didn't get in until 12:30.
  • Well we don’t half like a moan don’t we? Maybe we should be commenting on how nice it is to be in a queue with the rise in attendances for once!

If you know you reach a busy pinch point in your work commute what do you do? Do you complain to someone or do you leave 15 minutes earlier next time? Jesus!

That's how we were let in but even that packed up so the woman was just waving everyone through.

A  couple of switched on stewards made things a lot easier for the West stand.
One was using the hand held reader a good 40 minutes before kick off and not letting ques form and the other inside was taking all those who didn't know where their seats were to the seat.
