Bee Keeping

Any bee keepers on here. I’ve got a hive for housing a nucleus colony in the Spring.

No but we've had Ivy bees hatch on our front lawn for the second year running.
    Fascinating watching them.

We have kept bees but not very successfully. We may have some equipment available.

Always thought of you of more of an A man, rather than a bee.

Breakfast was nice. She had these lovely little pots of honey on the table. “I see you keep a bee”, I said. - Chic Murray

I've noticed a lot more in our garden this year. We've got a few lavender plants on our patio which attracts them but also the hibiscus seems to be a favourite for them.

Not got them but my wife wants some.

We did a beekeeping day down in Kent a few weeks ago and it was absolutely fascinating.
when we buy our “forever home” out in the sticks we’ll no doubt get some but where we currently are it’s not possible as the garden is just too small (poxy new build houses)

I was a beekeeper for about 7 years but had to give up due to a bad back - try lifting a Langstroth super full of honey!

Best advice is to join your local association and go to there winter talks and get to know people close to you, they will probably put you on their swarm list which will mean …. Free’bees!!

Nucs are around £200 to £300 but be careful, don’t buy just because they’re cheap!

    get ready for next May!!

The Ivy Cellophane Bee is my favourite bee. They are such beautiful creatures.

If there's any beekeepers that know about Bee Beards, I'd love to have a go at that.

We’ve had two hives this year as our friend is a bee keeper and wanted to use our land. I love helping him, although I did get stung on my ear lol.
Hubby has been stung multiple times so there’s no way we can do it ourselves.
The honey is lovely & should help with his hay fever which has got worse since being diagnosed with long Covid.

A friend of mine, I call her the bee lady, there's absolutely next to nothing she doesn't know about bees. Let me know if you need me to ask a question or two, on your behalf.

Is a small garden actually a barrier? I don't know anything at all about beekeeping except that a previous governor at the Bank of England, Robin Leigh-Pemberton, used to keep bees on the BoE's roof in the heart of the City! If they did okay there....

(The BoE still has hives but they are now in the grounds of the Printing Works at Debden.)

One of those hobbies that can become an obsession. But such a useful hobby to have.
    Good luck.

Was given a couple of hives when I lived Frenchside, and looked into having a go, but never got round to it in the end unfortunately.
  • Don’t need to watch that. It’s the bee joke. We used to judge someone on how they reacted to the bee joke. Literally would dismiss someone out of hand if they didn’t laugh.

Personally think it’s one of the funniest jokes ever told.

The issue is with how close your neighbours are to the hive.
