I went to the Sheffield United game last week with a friend who lives in Yorkshire. Earlier in the week, before the game, my friend, like many others, thought the Wilder effect could make it a difficult game. I flippantly sent back a text, saying, "No need to worry. It would have been 5-0 to Charlton, but we will have to settle for 1-0 with Wilder back". My friend was unconvinced. From the moment we met, I was assuring him and any Charlton fan I saw that we would win 1-0. Now, did I choose this as one of my predictions? No. And whose fault is that? Well, my father taught me never to bet on Charlton, and, although he's long gone, I obviously still believe him, which is galling in a week when I scored one point.
