Tell him it was you that bought the car, you've found a scratch somewhere else and you want, say, £400-£600 off the price you paid. Then, very generosity offer to call it quits.

Dont see any moral dillema at all. You offered to pay for damage and he didnt get back to you.

Tell him you’ll pay him what he wants in cash, you will meet him, tell him to bring the car and you’ll bring a Monday to get your money worth.

Ask for his bank details and then send him 1p with the reference, ‘ get it right up you’.

Radio silence is the way here. Let him take it through his insurance if he feels you have any responsibility after all this time. He won’t do anything as things don’t work the way he wants or thinks they can.

    That's really helpful, nice one.
  • Sadly, as the old saying goes, "No good deed goes unpunished."

A former girlfriend of mine backed her car into someone's front gate - causing minor damage.

They then took her to the small claims court, arguing that she should pay to have the entire front garden wall replaced - cheeky bastards.

The court ruled that she should only pay for a new gate, she was only a student so ended up paying 5 quid  a month for a couple of years to pay it off!

During my time in the Motor Trade I would do body repair estimates.  So the Insurance Company would send Joe Bloggs in his Hillman Hunter, Triumph Herald for an estimate
He would turn up in an old pile of… and then want a full respray for the cost of a new light lens and a quick bash about and panel spray.

I would tell the owner I will “blow it over “ for a £100, this was back in the 70s. We give him a kosher estimate for his insurance company and 9 out of 10.they would wet themselves to get the spray.

Wash ,and valet ,steam the engine bay.  Cut the paint with rubbing compound, Simoniz , machine polish the bonnet, clean the windscreen properly.
Tyre black the wheel jobs a gooden!  Saturday afternoon all done. About 2 hrs for 2 of us
If it didn’t rain it would last about a month, if it did all bets were off. But never had a knock back, That’s when I loved being a mechanic

Sounds like an open & shut case unlike the gate, after she pranged it.
