Signing an experienced left sided player is like "pulling hens teeth", they are rare compared with other players.  Clubs don't want to release a good one because they are difficult to replace .
Yet we weren’t prepared to pay the going Championship rate for Thierry Small.

Makes sense, has played in Scotland before and must be fed up not even making the bench

Please, no more League one un-tested players. Have we learnt nothing from the summer.  If we are going to recruit then we need experienced Championship players.

What's that I hear....."its going to cost money".
Well no shit sherlock. That's the price of promotion & owning an English football team. Did no-one tell the yanks that ?  Oh dear, Charlie salmon trousers really did pull the wool over their eyes.

Maybe nothing in this one, but Charlie Goode has recently started following Charlton on X. He's a right-footed CB, currently having a good season at Stevenage.
I know his brother Johnny B....🤦‍♂️

Apparently he’s mates with Chuks and Berry! 😉
  • Apter and tanto being off on loan would just show what an utter shambles our summer recruitment was. Two players we paid money for who we won’t play. Shambolic

With apologies for the overt racism (although Sandi Toksvig does it on QI and it doesn't seem to count if it's American accents that are being mocked).

*To be spoken in a New York gangster style*

"Hey, Walt.  Waddya tink about dat UK soccer team dat we bought?"

"It's great, Earl.  Best thing we ever done."

    "You tink?"

"Yeah.  Sure the guys ain't doing so great ... but those girls.  Yowser!  Yowser!  Yowser!"

"You're right, Walt.  An' one outta two ain't bad.  Plus dos dames don't cost too much."

"Hey.  I wish, Earl.  Did you never meet my wife?"

    *Outbreak of ironic laughter*

Our midfield is too soft. Would rather sign some physicality in there than a playmaker. Don’t think Costello won a 50:50 all game today, that’s why he’s not been playing
We need to improve on the ball too, we need more than a better version of Anderson.
One of those players can be Coventry in the short to medium term - we need someone who can compliment him, good with their positioning and can pick a pass up the field to relieve some pressure.
That Dobson lad at Wrexham looks ok
Coventry is fine but he was never an upgrade on Dobson.
We had posters aligning our poor season in 23/24 with the likes of Dobson and May and basically saying that showed their limit that season as well.. ridiculous views.

We still haven't replaced Dobson. An absolute joke we didn't secure him on a long term contract.

If we weren't so pathetic in contract dealings, he could still be in the heart of our midfield now and we could have Thierry Small at left back. Two players more than adequate at this level who had fight and skill.

    I fkn hate football.

Someone who works with the first team told me Small wanted to go to an established Championship club. He had pretty much made his mind up months before we went went up, and even if we did, he was still leaving.

I am sure if we had offered him silly money he might have stayed but for that money you could have got proven Championship quality which Small is not

It's the wrong Stevenage centre back!

Personally, I have no issue with Tanto and Apter going out on loan. They both need minutes and its only fair.

What concerns me is Jones record of signing attacking players so far is pretty poor. Godden has worked thats it. Gas man a flop and the jury is still out on Tanto and Kelman who between them cost about 5.5m. (too early to judge Dykes)

One of the Stoke fans’ biggest complaints about NJ was that he spent £7m on Sam Vokes who went on to score 8 in 78 for them.

Wow that is a lot for him. You could easily make this argument for midfielders. His defensive signings at large have been good, which you'd expect from a former defender

Interesting player , big physical 6ft 5 CB - had an injury ravaged spell at Brentford.
Sounds perfect for us and our ‘minted’ budget.
Seems to be fit now but his injury record has a lot of red flags.
Sounds ideal, sign him up !

We need a proper rumour today, him sacked or a signing

I was thinking that we also still have an issue down the right.  NJ has come out and said Harry Clarke’s minutes need to be managed, and supposedly, the only other player that can operate there (in favour), is JRC, but we’ve yet to see him play there.  Bree had gone off the boil toward the end, but the balance was always there with him.  If Apter goes on loan, we’ve now got Clarke, Ramsay and JRC that are the players available for that role.  I now think this is a problem area to

    Happy Monday everyone

He definitely isn't getting sacked.  Rumour is probably we can hope for.

I seem to remember that they didn't want to pay our Captain and best player the same as Tennai Watson was on 😳

Can't wait for the window to close, without many more incoming.
Then we have the excitement of seeing which free agents we can pick up on the cheap.

We can all be wise after the event, people need to remember that Small got back in the side as a right wing back, not his chosen left side, he couldn't dislodge Josh Edwards from the left side. Whatever we think about transfer policy you probably couldn't predict Josh Edwards injury and his further relapse, you could however predict that Amari Bell would miss almost half the season through injury and that Gillie would be hopelessly exposed without pace in front of him. In my opinion Small was not the answer then and I dont think he would have been now, but would should have happened to cover that position at the start of the season needs to happen now, we cannot have a left side with Gillie, a kid who hasnt played for almost a year and Amari Bell who may,  by his previous record, play only another nine games.

Never been more convinced that we need to switch to 451 and get rak saki in on the other side to TC - pay him whatever it takes and sign him up at the end of the season if it works - the alternative will be a lot more costly

Small was gone from about January onwards , he'd already made his mind up regardless. I get NJs comments from last week about struggling to find cover in the summer , obviously he had Joe Bennett on trial for a bit but probably thought he wasn't up to it.

Whatever happened to the Japanese right back we were linked with in the summer? His club turned a bid down but i thought he was out of contract once the J-League season ended.

Why buy more players when we could have some more fireworks before games?

    Signed a new contract iirc.

There’s absolutely no chance Rak-Sakyi will come here. Palace want to make money off him, we’d not be a good move for that at all. They’ll have plenty of better offers and even if JRS wants to come back here they aren’t going to allow it

They will want him to go to a team where he will put up good attacking numbers (not us), and a team that will add in a hefty permanent fee as part of the loan deal (not us)

Need some more height and physicality in our team, Millwall's giants stood out on Saturday and we didn't lay a glove on them. With the type of football we play, adding height and muscle is a no brainer.
