The problem is that our ability to attract players with reasonable levels of Championship experience are normally broken goods in some way/shape/form. We can bypass that to some extent with any players that NJ has previously worked with positively (the Luton players), but can we attract decent Championship players yet whilst we are still at risk of relegation? The answer is generally no - they can look at our drop in form, our demanding manager and the challenge that we have for the next few months and just think they don't fancy that. One would assume that we have identified a few players that might be out of favour / want to play etc., but we still end up with the same fitness / form challenges we've had previously. We don't really have time for players to take a month to get up to speed.Sword65pf said:Are People suggesting plucking the best of league 1 not watching our team?, we’ve done that already and a lot of people are saying how they haven’t stepped up, so why on earth fish in that same pond. We are not in a position to gamble on unproven players now. Proven experience or undoubted talent is required, where that is I don’t know, hope NJ and Phil C do.
There's plenty of players that we / Birmingham / Wrexham have (plus others who got signed in the Summer to other Championship sides like say, Galbraith to Swansea) that can and have made the step up and can fit in comfortably at the level. There are a number of players in League One right now that will get promoted this year and perform in this league next season. Yes, absolutely it's a bit of a gamble - but generally these players are more open to a move to the league above, playing regularly and more able to fit into the team right away.
We just simply don't hold much draw to any decent Championship players right now. We can get the ones that are not playing at all and might even be considering dropping down a league anyway, but I just tend to think that I'd rather bring in players on the up than those that are on their way down. Remember when we had clubs sniffing around our players from the Championship when we were still down there - it's just a different kind of appeal.
As much as I would love us to bring in a number of signings with a wealth of experience, we still are where we are as a club and have to make the money go around. With the more urgent role of a LWB for example, you might want to lean into someone bang in form from League One who can play immediately. In the less demanding positions, you can shop around and be more picky with the criteria.
Good, experienced players for this league are not easy to find, nor easy for us to have enough draw for.3 -

Funnily enough Blackburn fans sounding very similar to us, comments under the tweet about playing him out of position as they play wing-backs and strikers and he's neither, and someone else wishing for Kellior-Dunn instead.Callumcafc said:https://x.com/roversxtra/status/2005974414224154892?s=46&t=ynww82GMl7VKBjthBflU0g
Doesn’t explicitly name Charlton but thought worth posting
He plays the TC role for Barnsley: left winger who cuts in on his right foot. 5 goals and 6 assists from 16 games (11 starts) this season.
I hadn't realised Barnsley were so poor this season, down in 15th and much nearer the relegation places than the playoffs. Keillor-Dunn has done the business for them this season, but keeping him hasn't made them a decent side.Bit like us when we had Alfie May, they've got one of the top scorers in the Division currently. But they've got the sixth worst defence in the LeagueWho would have thought that solely having someone scoring goals constantly is never enough2
