The Charlton Museum - featured in the latest issue of 'Backpass' Magazine
The latest issue of 'Backpass' Magazine (Issue 95, Christmas & New Year 2025/26) has a very interesting article on football museums, featuring our very own Charlton Museum, as well as those of Wimbledon and Exeter.
Andy Leeder, organiser of the Southend United Ex-Players Association, is determined to establish a museum for his club in order to preserve and promote its heritage. A survey conducted by Southend’s history group last season found that, whilst half of the Premier League clubs operate a museum (some of whom charge for admission as part of stadium tours), only six of the 72 EFL clubs do so. Accompanied by club chairman, Justin Rees - whose consortium's takeover in July 2024 rescued Southend from collapse under former owner Ron Martin - Andy Leeder embarked on a 24-hour tour, which took in the delights of the Charlton, AFC Wimbledon and Exeter museums en route to Southend's away fixture at Truro. As he says, "It was a bespoke build-up to a match like no other. We listened, learned and were inspired."
The article largely comprises a series of key questions, with responses from Ben Hayes (aka Henry Irving of this parish) and representatives from the Wimbledon and Exeter Museums, together with a nice photo of Ian Wallis, Steve Sutherland and the two guys from Southend. A great example of cooperation from supporters who revere the history and soul of the beautiful game.
For me, 'Backpass' is a great quarterly magazine of football history, heritage and nostalgia, focusing largely on the period from the 1950s to the 1980s. I'm sure a number of Lifers subscribe to it, although it is much lower profile than publications such as 'When Saturday Comes'. As well as a raft of in-depth and entertaining articles, it includes regular features such as 'A Day In Time' (with results, team line ups, goal scorers and attendances) and Obituaries (featuring not just well known players, but stalwarts of the lower leagues). Highly recommended.

Never heard of it but would love to buy one. Is it available in Smiths or online only? Cheers.0

The guys at Southend do a great job especially considering the crap they've been through. If you think we've had it bad...
They have a very big and active former players associatio and an active supporters trust.
Their chairman was really impressed with our museum and even donated £100
If anyone has a spare copy of this issue please let us have it for our archive.3 -
Smiths would be your best bet , the magazine has had struggles with stockists in the past , relies on subscriptions to keep it going. Recommended though.charlton4ever said:Never heard of it but would love to buy one. Is it available in Smiths or online only? Cheers.1 -
