Week 15 brought confusion after Charlton’s early abandonment was scored as a 0–0 under the existing rules. While the rule is clear (see rules), it doesn’t work well when a match ends so early, which made it harsh on some competitors this week. There’s no simple alternative, though. As outlined in my third post, every option has its own flaws, in my view. Feel free to comment on my points.

Returning to this week's results, the star of the show was @Bedsaddick with 7 points, who was a whisker away from a full house, spoiled by Villa's late winner over Arsenal. Two points behind were @bobmunro and @AFKABartram with a highly commendable 5 points, but over half of us scored 0 points or 1 point. The six 2nd Round FA Cup games were particularly unpredictable, while there were only 18 correct scores predicted from almost 400 predictions. However, @Sonicstud85 has now gone 13 weeks, scoring 2+, which is, as far as I know, a record. There are still nine competitors who have never been on the Noughty Step - can they all make it into 2026? At the top, @JustFloydRoad has enough of a lead to relax over Christmas. There are now just two weeks left before the top 128 will be entered into the Prediction Cup, which starts on the first weekend of the New Year.

Thoughts about abandoned games

The abandonment of Charlton's game meant that those predicting the result were arguably disadvantaged, even though the rules clearly state that the score at the time of abandonment stands. There were two unusual issues: 1) The game was abandoned very early on, meaning that there was little or no clue as to the final outcome if the game had finished, and 2) The game involved Charlton, which usually attracts more predictions than any other game. Postponed and abandoned games pose a problem for the Prediction League, regardless of the rules in place. If rules are complicated, it doesn't work. Further, when games are postponed, particularly if it's something like Crewe v Doncaster, many competitors may not be aware of this until it's too late. Indeed, if a Sunday game is postponed, there is no alternative to choose. I've considered five alternatives for handling abandoned games, but each has weaknesses. These are:

1) Treat abandoned games like postponed games - Problems - a) About 50% of competitors would probably not pick an alternative (this is based on what actually happens when games are postponed on Saturday morning or later). b) What if the game is abandoned late on - and you have the correct score? Do you score zero unless you pick an alternative? c) If it's a less publicised game, some
competitors wouldn't know about it.
2) Apply a cut-off time, i.e. if game is abandoned after less than, say, 30 minutes, treat is as null and void. - Problems - a) Same as above. b) What is a reasonable cut-off time? c) Most would not be aware of the rule.
3) Treat abandoned and postponed games as null and void and allow an extra prediction the following week: Problems - a) Unfair to those with correct late-match scores. b) Many will not understand the rule/forget on the following week. c) Administratively difficult for TMA. d) Complications with any bonus points if someone makes 4 or 5 predictions.
4) Award a flat 0.5 points or 1 point for any abandoned game - Problems - a) Tough if a game is abandoned near the end and you have the correct score. b) Treats accurate and wildly inaccurate predictions the same.
5) Keep the current system - Problems - a) Unfair when a game is abandoned early. b) True outcome is always speculative.

If anyone would like to comment or has any other ideas, please post below. All I would say, it needs to be clear and obvious and work the same in all cases, in my view.

I would pick option 1- the only reason I suggest this since competitors like myself thought this was the case anyway, and like you communicated nobody predicted 0-0 Charlton Portsmouth.

It is so rare for a game to be abandoned that I would suggest keeping the same system.

Not easy, and I would echo the praise of the job you do TMA.

I think the current system is best, as abandonments are so rare.

And any other system creates different unfairness anyway. Voiding the game completely penalises people who want to keep their original prediction, and it would be massively complicated for you if people had a choice  of keeping the 0-0 or switching to another game.
