Just read that he played 243 consecutive games from 1976-1980.
Truly amazing stat when you remember how wingers were kicked to pieces back in the day.7 -
RIP John...Recall Peter Shilton telling a story about him on talk sport many years ago.
He said he had to give John a lift to training every day and back as he was banned from driving and saw him limp down the garden path. When he asked him what was wrong he said he fell over pissed in his back garden.
When they trained he said Robertson managed to train without showing the limp as Clough would have dropped him and always played a winning team from the match before otherwise he would have been out.
he said when he dropped him off he could barely walk up his garden path but played a few days later.4 -
The player Clough praised the most out of his double European cup winning side.

Possibly only a genius manager like Clough would have got the best out of him. Integral to the great Forest sides of the 1970s
His wiki page is worth a read

That's a shock. Great player RIP0

As a further from above Shilton said Forest only had about 14 first team players and some of those never ever played as he always played his strongest 11, even if he was playing a testimonial against his mother. I am sure one of those seasons forest played about 70 games due to their involvement in Europe and domestic trophies on top of 42 league games.CaptainRobbo said:Just read that he played 243 consecutive games from 1976-1980.

From the days when wingers could go on the outside as well as cutting in and someone who Cloughie, being a maverick himself, understood and treated him accordingly.

Met him and the Forest team back in the 70’s in Benidorm just before Christmas one year … Clougie stayed at home and Peter Taylor took them.Me and my mates hung around with them every night and he was terrific fun along with Archie Gemmill and Martin O’Neill. And they still managed training on the beach opposite our hotel every morning at 8am when we were still recovering in bed.8 -
He was part of a great Forest team
Unheard of now to see a team come up from the Championship(old Lg 2) and go onto win LG1 ( nor the Prem) and then European Cup( now Chsmps Lg)
We beat them on a famous night 2-1 in Lg 2 in yr they went up and even Cloughie next day said what a good team we were
Forest in the CoveredEnd that night but that’s another story…4 -
Was also at that 2-1 we were superb that night.raytreacy69 said:He was part of a great Forest team

Have you heard the story about when he tried to sign Dean Saunders? The Red Robin said:Not old enough to remember him but I do have an unhealthy Brian Clough obsession. A true British footballing legend.1 -
Was at the 2-1 match and remember he played well but Charlton were Superb that night.1

A proper winger. Didnt seem to have any pace but could beat his man easily & put the cross on a sixpence.
RIP.3 -
One of my all time favourite players. As John McGovern said was like Ryan Giggs but had two good feet and more ability.

That is so sad. RIP.
At his peak, he was probably the most influential player in the First Division. A wonderful talent. Full-backs knew what he was going to do but just couldn't stop him.
Features prominently in that wonderful DVD on the Foreset glory years, I Believe In Miracles.0 -
Fine player. RIP0

One of the best wingers I ever saw, which is a bit strange because he didn't seem to have any pace & his body shape made him an unlikely footballer.0

Yes - I'm not sure Saunders misses a chance to tell that story.CaptainRobbo said:
