I should have said "bat sponsors" because so many pro bats aren't actually made by the company advertised on the stickers.

A friend of mine, Gavin Hamilton, currently General Manager of Cricket at Yorkshire, has been talking up the prospects of 25 year old George Hill playing for England in Test cricket, potentially as the all rounder we're missing. These are his stats:

FC career average with bat: 31.20
    2026 averages (Div 1) with bat: 34.30

FC career average with ball: 21.28 & ER of 2.74
    2026 averages (Div 1) with ball: 18.57 & ER of 2.53

These are Stokes stats by way of a comparison (includes Tests and this season in Div 2):

FC career average with bat: 34.64
    2026 averages (Div 2) with bat: 47.88

FC  career average with ball: 28.87 & ER of 3.41
    2026 averages (Div 2) with ball: 20.38 & ER of 2.98

In a recent game against Essex, Hill produced the impressive match figures of 15.5-10-14-5 so he clearly has the ability to put the ball on the spot. Hamilton says he isn't fast (80mph plus) but can bowl a quick bouncer. So, he might at this stage be a Robinson at 8 who could develop into that number 7.

Hill is also a very very good fielder. He is definitely in the conversation as that control bowler who can nip it about should Robinson be unavailable. Or maybe we could play two of them. Two Robinsons! I guess it depends on where the game is played

Is that the same Gavin Hamilton that played for both Scotland and England?

It is. Came down with his family from Scotland when he was seven or eight. Played for Sidcup CC (opened the batting for the first time at the age of 12 when I captained the Sunday 2s), which is where I know him from, but when he was 15, the family went back up to Scotland. He was then taken by Omar Henry for a couple of winters to South Africa and it was Henry who turned him into a seam bowler. Up until then he'd been a batter, leggie and keeper! In fact, there wasn't much he couldn't do at sport - football (was on Arsenal's books), golf, you name it.

Was hoping they might actually use the squad instead of rolling out the same ODI side they always do. What's the point in playing Archer?

Pretty strong Lions squad named but the lead story is buried, Jonathan Trott to coach. Good to see him in the England set up and Mccullum might be looking over his shoulder a bit more now

Trott now confirmed to lead the Lions all winter

Not a surprise but Mark Wood has retired from international cricket. Such a shame that his body constantly let him down and that he won't get a proper send off

England are no longer top of the world T20 rankings but only as a result of India's two run win against Japan. Yes Japan. In a much reduced match of 5 overs a side, India managed just mIn what would have been probably one of, if not the, biggest upsets of all time Japan finished with 30-3. They needed a boundary off the final ball and managed just a single. This wasn't an India D tea, either - all 11 are household names whereas I couldn't name a single Japanese player.

India bowled a wide in the final over and then managed to convince the umpire to overturn the decision and so the wide was wiped

Declan Suzuki-McComb is one, which is a great name.

One of Seb's mates plays club 2nd XI cricket and was in the Japan U19 WC squad a few years ago as his mother is Japanese. Seb qualifies, via my heritage, to play for Hungary and has often thought about doing so. That would be fun for someone who doesn't speak or understand a word of the language. Not that this has stopped others doing so for any number of ICC associate nations.

Definitely someone who's earned the right to play a bit of lucrative franchise cricket now.

Run out decision just now was farcical.
Given out, then not out on review, then out again.

If the not out decision had stood, it would’ve been ridiculous.
Lovely bit of fielding from Archer, by the way.

Gotta have cox as test keeper now his keeping to spinners is another level to smith.

Apparently if Archer’s throw hadn’t been fast and accurate enough to remove the stump from the ground, it would’ve been not out?
This seems crazy to me. The batter was so far out of his crease, it seems wrong that you could hit the stumps hard enough to move them significantly, but not enough to remove one from the ground, yet a man a good two feet short would be not out because the wicket keeper accidentally nudged the bails before the ball came in.

I guess it’s to encourage keepers to be careful not to dislodge the bails, but in this instance it would’ve been somewhat ludicrous.

Jordan Cox, Sam Billings and Ollie Robinson came through the Kent system and were all coached by Ray Willis there. Had Ollie Robinson played when he was flown out to NZ then that would have been three England keepers Ray would have coached.
