Typical for N’hants to get off to such a good start after I talked up our bowlers. Hopefully there will be a chance for them on Sunday; tomorrow looks a write-off if the forecast is right.

So, we might not be quite doing our bit but that other lot certainly are. Surrey are 45 runs behind with just 6 wickets in hand in their second innings with Essex still to bat again. Rain delay but Northants 235-3 which means we have gained a bowling point. Northants need 15 runs for a batting point whereas we need 3 more wickets for another bowling point.
In the circumstances probably best to take the draw now for us if the weather is bad enough.2 -

Durham are now 40 points clear and champions-elect. With four games to go, of which three for which we will have home advantage, we are level on points with Northants and 24 points ahead of our next opponents, Worcstershire.
Our remaining matches are Worcestershire (4th - home), Derbyshire (6th - away), Lancashire (home - 7th) and Gloucestershire (home - 8th).
Northants have - Durham (home - 1st), Worcstershire (away - 4th), Derbyshire (home - 6th) and Middlesex (away - 5th).
So we have an easier, on paper, run in and promotion is still very much in our hands. One would hope that our bowling attack will be strengthened by the arrival of Mahmud who is back in the UK and possibly one further overseas recruit too.7 -

Seb's mate George O'Connor, from their time together in Australia, is playing for Worcs 2s today along with George Ealham who must have half a dozen county second XIs now to his name.

I wish I could have your confidence. Our bowling attack is very poor, lets hope Mahmud and other bowler improve that. We were quite inept against Northants, and I do believe, they will do enough to go up, even with a harder run in. We just don't have enough batting, or bowling. TBH, even if we do go up, we will be mullered in Division 1, and it would be better if we strengthened and improved our financial situation. I'm certainly not suggesting that, should we go up, we aren't going to struggle. We are also a long way behind Durham. But the inescapable truth is that we have gone from finishing bottom last season with 2/14 wins to second this season with 5/10 wins and just that single defeat. We struggled against Northants without Milnes on that final day (bowled just 7/97 overs in the innings) plus the likes of Mahmud and Khaled. So, potentially (and I am including this year's improved version of Ekansh to the one from last season), all bar two of those players are better, man for man.
As for Hollioake (and I've said this before), as much as I know and like Matt Walker as a person, I'm not sure that he would have made the brave calls to leave Evison and Finch out for Benjamin and Ekansh and let's not forget releasing Leaning. Ironically, Walks will be in charge of both Leaning and Evison next season. That has definitely improved the CC side.
The biggest issue is improving our financial position. We can't compete with the Test/Hundred counties and unless we can find some massive sponsors it is difficult to see how that will change. In the meantime, let's embrace all that we have achieved this season with our somewhat limited resources. This is still a stepping stone and hopefully we can get Mahmud again, a good spinner and another quick and the likes of Dawkins, Jaydn and Curtiss start to bang down the first team door next season in the way Ekansh has this year and we will improve again.

I've just seen a rumour on the Kent supporters Facebook group that Dudgeon is off to Sussex next year. Must admit that, if this is true, then I'm in two minds. There have been occasions when he has had some very good spells but there have been quite a few average ones - 32 wickets at 32.56 with an E/R of 3.99 is nothing to write home about and certainly one would hope for better from an overseas. That said, his contribution with the bat at 9/10 of 20.56 per innings has been invaluable at times.2

This has been doing the rounds at the Sussex end of things for about the last fortnight. A bit baffling when our batting is incredibly light for next season. I've no insight re Dudgeon but it could be that Kent have an idea what they are looking for next year and he doesn't fit that. Equally, sometimes players move for the same, or even less money, if it means that their spell abroad sits more comfortably with home life and playing commitments.
Dudgeon played his first game for us on 28th March but, including his games before that in SA, he has been on the go since 1st February - so that will be a relentless eight months by the time we get to the end of September which is a lot for a seamer. I also can't help thinking that he has suffered at times through having to be over bowled due to the lack of options in all competitions and that might be something that both he and Kent aren't comfortable with happening again. It's also probably the very reason why we've taken on two overseas quicks for September.
If we look at the rest of the overseas signings this season, they have very much been specific in terms of what is required and also the period required. That strategy is a real gamble as we found with Muthusamy it can leave us very much short but, financially, it's probably cheaper than having to fund for two overseas for the duration of the season.

Squad for tomorrow - three overseas and one suspects that Dudgeon will be the one to miss out. No Parkinson in the squad suggests that we might now play Foreman and rest Ekansh or Stewart or play an all seam attack.
