MATCH PREVIEW: Leicester City vs Charlton Athletic - Saturday 31st January 2026: 12.30pm Kick-Off
Leicester City vs Charlton Athletic
Saturday 31st January 2026 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Andrew Kitchen
Introduction
Charlton return to League action this Saturday, with the second of two games on the road. The team travel to the Midlands after 4-0 loss at Millwall last weekend and what was back to back defeats, after starting 2026 with two draws and a win.
The Opposition
Name: Leicester City (14th) - Caretaker Manager: Andy King
Ground: The King Power Stadium
Previous League Result: Leicester 1-2 Oxford
Leicester will be our hosts for the next game, and come into this game without a Manager after Martí Cifuentes was sacked following their own recent defeat, a 1-2 loss coming at the hands of our relegation rivals: Oxford United - The Foxes have now gone three games without win, their last points coming in a 1-1 draw with Wrexham on 20th January - Yet Leicester have still only lost four games at home all season, a stat matched by the visitors
Taking over as Manager this weekend will be Andy King, who takes charge of the hosts on an interim basis, and played as a Midfielder for Leicester, playing over 300 games. All eyes will be on emerging talent: Abdul Fatawu who struck the sole goal in a 1-0 win at the Valley early on in the season, yet its Jordan James who sits as Leicester's top scorer with nine goals this term. Charlton's luck at the King Power has been mixed, three games have ended 1-1, with both sides recording a solitary victory ours came in 2013, a 1-2 win.
Charlton Team News
All eyes will be once again on the team sheet that gets picked ahead of Saturdays match, with every decision micro analysed to the death. Its likely that Greg Docherty could once again be absent from the team, given the rumours of his falling out with Nathan Jones, and could soon depart the club... Rob Apter and Tanto Olaofe have left on loan.
Incomings aren't just expected but demanded, with each new potential arrival written off before the ball has even been kicked; Luke Chambers the latest arrival on loan from Liverpool, and will be expected to start on Saturday, with his minutes once again managed as he gains match fitness. Along with Jayden Fevrier who joins, also on loan, from Stockport County. Other names have been linked with the club, amongst those Conor Coady. Whilst from the injury table, it looks like we may see Amari'i Bell available once more.

They’re a decent team who have lost their way a bit recently. Can’t see us getting anything here. How much longer does Nathan Jones get?4

I want to see TC rip 32yr old Pereira to shreds please. Could not tell you what lineup we play though1

The amount of player business I woke up to, I forgot to even look for the match preview! If football was fair, we get a draw or win from this, as Leicester certainly didn't deserve all 3 points at The Valley (the difference being a multi-million pound premier league standard player). We can barely score, so at best feel we are looking at 1-0 win, or 0-0/1-1 draw, If we decide to play/defend as we did against Millwall then it's an easy win for Leicester.4

It would be nice just to get across the halfway line.19

Was thinking a 2 nil defeat before all our transfer activity yesterday.
Now probably a 4 nil defeat.
I have serious concerns about how we are being run as a club and how we go about our scouting of players.
Having gone to Millwall last Saturday and watched us totally capitulate it's getting hard to find any positivity at the moment.
I can only hope that against all odds these players can turn things around and we get a result.
Head says 3 nil Leicester

Very pessimistic about our chances (both in this game and in general). It’s not often that I’d take a point before kick off but I definitely would for this. It’s a 92 for me so that’s about the only justification I have for traipsing up to this one!4

Hoping we can buck the trend as Leicester apparently have not kept a clean sheet in 23 games! Please let us give it a real go. Coya.2

I still think things can change pretty quickly but this is a game I feel we will lose. No idea what team NJ will field. There will be increasing pressure on him if we are well beaten and he doesn't react well to this. Sadly a 3-0 defeat but I do hope I am wrong and we put on a massive performance after last weeks debacle.1

Going to this and looking forward to it. Hopefully the squad will have more balance for this game. I know TC is a decent attacking outlet, I'd rather Chambers and Fevrier start for said balance. As Ramsay looks poor atm. I'd have Jones at RCB with Coady in the middle, if fit of course.

I’ll be in the pub by then celebrating our win…13 -

Brave man writing a preview when we are still to sell 4 players and bring in their Cray Wanderers loan replacements16

Just seen NJ hiding at the Dino Golf next to the Cray Wanderers ground, had a bunch of contracts with him and a massive net...AFKABartram said:Brave man writing a preview when we are still to sell 4 players and bring in their Cray Wanderers loan replacements3 -
4-0 to Leicester. More meltdown on CL.1
-
I fear another battering as they have just sacked their manager and their players look as if they downed tools for the last one.
Not hopeful at all.4 -
Can’t see anything other than a defeat especially if they have a new manager sitting in the stands .With our lack of creativity and crocked defenders .2-0 defeat1

To be honest... Dont give much of a shit right nowAFKABartram said:Brave man writing a preview when we are still to sell 4 players and bring in their Cray Wanderers loan replacements1 -

Need a win here. They have been very poor recently and so this is definitely one of the more winnable games we have left.
A draw, given away would just about be ok.
A heavy loss and I fear the crowd turns toxic and never recovers.

Nowhere to hide for Mr Jones on this one. To not get a response from the team after last week’s atrocity, would be absolutely unacceptable
Ramsay should be dropped, doesn’t deserve a place in the team after his pathetic performance against Millwall, players need to be held to account.Other than, I don’t want to see us start in our usual tepid manner. Get into them. Yes, they’ve become a mess under Cifuentes who has now gone, but show some bollocks after last week. We’ve got to get in their faces and actually do something when we get the ball. An early goal against us and we’re screwed.Come on Jones, time to show us you can adapt and adjust10 -
Don't disagree. But if we are dropping players with pathetic performances against Millwall last weekend, then we will be playing the u21s against Leicester this weekend.cabbles said:Nowhere to hide for Mr Jones on this one.
