Last weekend, I was sitting in a pub, watching two lads about 10 years old playing football outside in the rain. They were wearing t-shirts and looked drenched. I can still remember a game against Bury when I watched Charlton win in pouring rain. I stood with my friend wearing a t-shirt on the vast East terrace and met my Dad at the end of the game. "Great win", I chirruped as I ran towards him with a big smile on my face. "You absolute fool", he replied crossly. "You're soaked. What were you doing standing in the rain?" He was not a happy bunny. The result of the game may have been good, but the result of standing in the rain was a ban from the next home game, the only game I missed that season. At school on Monday, we had to write two short pieces: one about something that made us very happy and one about something disappointing. I wrote about Charlton's win and my Dad's ban. This was bad judgement on my part, as Parents' Evening was a couple of days away, and my teacher mentioned the stories to my parents. Dad came home from Parents' Evening irate and threatened to extend the ban to a second and third game. However, it sharpened me as a young man, improving my powers of persuasion. I was only banned for one game and got to see two reserve games in the same week or so, if I remember correctly. Nowadays, if it's slightly chilly or damp, I ask my wife whether wearing four layers looks too ridiculous.
