edited February 25 in Match Day Travel

Due to planned engineering work on the18th/19th April between Bedford & St Pancras there will be no direct trains between London & Sheffield.

An alternative route is Kings Cross to / from Doncaster & then a train to/ from Meadowhall/ Sheffield, there is a direct tram service from Meadowhall to ./ from/ Leppings Lane.[nearest tram stop to Hillsborough].

The date / kick-off time will be confirmed about 4 weeks before the the game.

I can't imagine Sky choosing any Sheffield Wednesday games for TV coverage for the rest of the season.

It’s almost getting to the point when you expect train disruption every away game now.

Spot on, in my last job I had to take a Thameslink train, the absolute worst service ever, never a couple of days without an issue that led to delays and cancellations.
If the idiots that run that service run trains to Sheffield it might be better to start walking.

It'll be quicker than a Larkfield coach.
  • The coach from Charlton to West Brom and back last night made me sympathise with the good people of Larkfield

What time did you get back? Our train got back to Euston at 01:10

Back in Charlton at about 1.30, missed the last 161 by 10 minutes or so

On the assumption that the chances of this game being televised are minuscule, we've taken the plunge and are going up on the 8:40 from King's Cross (due to arrive at 11:19), returning on the 19:57 (arriving 22:21). Decent railcard price of £45 with SplitSave on Trainline.

Plenty of time for a few cleansing ales in the Sheffield Tap, The Fat Cat and the Kelham Island Tavern.

Likely to drive up for this I think.

Looking forward to visiting my old Unit town again.

Kelham Island is great (but was a red light/no go zone when I was there at uni!).

Booked the 10.40 hoping that we don't get moved to a 12.30

Hopefully we'll be ok. The game's a dead rubber for Wednesday (if not for us) and there are some quite attractive fixtures currently scheduled for 18 April, including Ipswich v Middlesbrough, Blackburn v Coventry and Portsmouth v Leicester. Wrexham v Stoke must also have a good chance of being televised.

Better off driving there anyway. It’s miles from any train station really and you won’t get on a tram after full-time.

I’ve never had a problem getting on a tram at full time. Although obviously packed.

Likewise, but I have always been mindful of leaving immediately on the whistle(or before on the odd occasion) as they do not seem to have an increased service for the football.

Realistically what sort of time do you think you could be on a tram at full time? looking at train options back home from Doncaster

I would allow at least an hour for the journey back to Sheffield Station, as the direct trams do not run to/from the station & you either have a 5-7 minute walk from the City Centre or you can change onto another tram to the station.

Meadowhall is an easier interchange as the tram from Leppings Lane terminates there but takes about 15 minutes longer from the City Centre & obviously is slightly closer to Doncaster.

There is a cracking bar on the platform in Grantham, make sure you afford time for at least one there.

Just the 8 minute stopover this time, but will definitely take that into account next time.
