Is a Scottish premiership defender worth £2m?

80% of the division is League 1 standard at best, the remaining 20% is upper championship, maybe?
Whilst I agree there are definitely gems in there. Andy Robertson to Hull springs to mind

We also might have just decided he isn’t worth £1.8m to us
Quiet, but some on here just think you should spend whatever
Didn’t we also think that Boreham Wood wanted too much for Sorba Thomas…

that worked out well didn’t it.

But that argument goes both ways, we spent too much on Charlie Kirk, Scott Fraser, Chris Gunter etc. and how did they work out?

With wingbacks absolutely key to the way we pay, getting in good ones is vital. Especially a left footed one. And especially considering Edwards missed most of the season.

Ferry has just started getting called up for the senior Ireland team and imho is well worth that. Whether we could or would go for it is another matter.

    Potential Rumour:

A fella in a golf society my brother is in, his son plays for Boro and has been let go, Sam Silvera. We are his preferred choice (don't know if we have made contact)
Was that Middlesborough, Peterborough, or Scarborough...😉

I think if Charlton want to keep Jones, then they need to put up some money into his salary. It would be well spent. He has the consistency and quality required, and most importantly, the attitude needed, to pull this squad of inferior players through another trapdoor avoiding season, leading from the back!

He has the potential to be up there with JJ and dare I say it, SCP in player standings, if he stays a few more years and remains fit.

Not everyone is lured by money, even in football.

To me, whether he stays is on our owners and NJ. If there is an upgrade on Jones out there, we can't afford him and he wouldn't sign for us (is my own view).

Hoping he stays more than anyone else in the team.
On the positives, also, Jones will play for most games for us, at West Ham he will face stiff competition and if they succeed in going up will be a one season wonder. So up his money but don't break the bank and strongly lobby Wales to give him a chance.

Considering the crazy money in the championship 2 mill matches a high league one/lower champ level player.

Could be absolutely nothing but the media team lead with a photo of L Jones & Ramsay on the training photos today…

Sorba Thomas was more of an issue with the owner at Borehamwood being impossible to deal with at the time

I have a cousin who is a Bristol City ST Holder, I asked him about Sykes last week, after he messaged to say they were signing the new Yaya Toure, his reply was "he is absolute litter".

I took this for a bristolian way of "utter shit". So I reckon he will do well for us 😂

I wonder if the sale of players is a big factor on our transfer dealings.  We have a few to offload and will be a dent in our budget I would think.

Apparently someone has mentioned on the Forum never to be mentioned that someone who looks like Nathan Redmond and One looks like that Bolton player who was released Jordi Osei-Tutu are at the training ground.

    A lot happening next week…
I let the garden go a bit because I said to myself I will do it once I get back from Ireland.
It got rough, but when I got back it was too damn hot to do anything.
So this week is gardening week.
Cut the hedges, cut the grass, sort the weeds growing in the cracks, trim some flowers, pressure wash the concrete bits, assemble the gazebo, put a table and chairs out.
Too right there’s a lot happening.
I don’t like gardening but I owe it to my neighbours to keep stuff in order.
On top of all that starting Friday I have another two week duty to feed local feral cat Harry.

Harry looks the sort of cat you don’t want to mess with.

I know Cawley played down the ferry rumours a few weeks ago but had a 1.7M bid accepted from a Czech club, even if we were interested doubt we’d willing to pay that much for a player with no guarantee to start ahead of Edwards

Worth noting that the Ferry bid is apparently £1.8m plus significant add-ons. we don't know how much those are but if we're talking about a backup/rotation option at LWB we might consider possibly being tied in to paying say £3m would be too much. Everyone still seems to be upset about the reported £2.5m for Apter who was brought in to be first choice and the £1m on Olaofe who was supposed to fight for a first team place so it's likely they're just taking more care with the fees this time round

Also suggested by the fact we’re in for Koumetio at multiple 6 figure bids we’re looking for more value

I don’t think that kind of fee is out of our reach. But we need to be signing very good midfielders, right wing backs and probably a striker that are more urgent than our need for a LWB. I’d rather the money went on those, yes we will still need a new LWB but the bulk of the budget should go on the midfield and RWB where our current starters aren’t good enough

Was this posted by Will Salt? Assuming the guessing on Osei-Tutu is correct (and hoping the guessing on Redmond isn't) that would make sense as a signing; a player who can play full back, wingback or winger on either side would likely have the versatility that you don't quite get with Apter, Fevrier or Clarke in varying degrees. Supposedly very quick and good as a 1v1 threat which is what Jones said we were lacking this season

I just saw his mum, Linda, crossing the Mersey, so that ship must have sailed.

Osei-Tutu on a free as backup wing back would be fine. For first choice though we will hopefully be aiming for a lot better

Redmond would be a strange one. Is it possible he knows Nathan Jones from Southampton? Quite often these things are a bit of a favour, he needs somewhere to get fit, we’re happy with having a good senior player involved in pre-season - a bit like we did with the left back Bennett last summer

I'm calling bullshit on that Will Ferry to Czechia rumour. The only mention of it here is in Czech media sources reporting the sources from England. What's more, only three clubs could even consider paying such a transfer fee up front, (my view, but ChatGPT confirms and one of them is Viktoria. For them, it would be a departure both from their transfer strategy and the type of players that they look for) and there are not many players in Czechia earning the sort of money you can earn in the Championship generally.

EDIT. ChatGPT gave me an earning range of £5-11k a week at Slavia or Sparta. Rest of the first league £1.3 - 4.5k a week.

Or more likely it wasn’t even Redmond.

Couple of mentions now of signing players as a backup I’m not sure why? The only kind of backup player I would expect us to maybe consider is Fevrier and even then if we played the 4-2-3-1 I’d expect him to start games.

LWB, LCB, CM, RWB, RM are at the very least positions we need to improve in the first team even if that means Bell moving to the subs bench and Edwards rotating for a place at LB/LWB

This is the kind of progress we simply have to make this summer no matter how harsh it may be on some. If we don’t then relegation is a very big risk.

based on previous season of trying to guess a player from a distance at the training ground the player in question will be white & ginger

NEXT week. Like tomorrow, next week never comes.
So Charlton43 believes from July 5-10 to be busy, not today until this Friday. The confusion arises because not everyone considers Sunday to be the start of the week.

So tomorrow (30th June) is the day that players with contacts that expire in 2026 end.  I assume that means Lyndon Dykes is no longer a Charlton player ... not sure who else that applies to..?
