Summer Window 2026 - Rumours and Discussion

Let's hope today is the day we see this illustrious, much discussed signing, not Nathan Redmond please Nathan Jones2

I think the ownership stuff has dented a lot of enthusiasm for the new season. We were led to believe that the owners were backing NJ to improve the squad significantly, whereas it now feels the only backing they may be doing is out.cfgs said:Weird this morning how the posts have dwindled, like people are waiting for something to actually happen now.
This may be unfair and we may be pleasantly surprised in the next two weeks when the Championship equivalent of Iniesta is signed for our midfield. But optimism has been dulled I would say.4 -
If we do sign Redmond can only assume some kind of Nathan based bias at play here, who will be next??? Nathan Harness!?0

I hope he's right and I am wrong, we are all winners then.wolfgang said:Braziliance and Naby Sarr have both made good arguments. We will only know which is correct once the window closes.
Well, not even then. Because we might have filled all the holes in the team, but would have to wait for a couple of months to see if we have signed the quality and durability needed.4 -
Sage said:Current players that would count towards the 25 man squad limit:
Kaminski, Mannion, Brooks
Ramsay, McNamara, Asiimwe, Jones, Sichenje, Burke, Bell, Koumetio, Edwards, Mesik
Coventry, Docherty, Rakin-Costello, Knibbs, Carey
Apter, Campbell, Grant, Alli
Godden, Leaburn, Kelman, Tanto, Kanu
Players that would not count:
Gough, Enslin, Mwamba, Fuller, Mbick
That’s a total of 32 players with 27 counting towards the limit.
We can assume Asiimwe, Tanto, and Kanu will
move on. Brings the total down to 24. Ideally we need to move on another one or two on top of those 3 mentioned.
Important to note that as far as I understand, any loan players signed, no matter of age, count towards the 25 man squad.
For us to sign at least 2 players, ideally we need at least 3 (we’ve covered the positions), we need at least 4 players to leave.
Lots of work to do before we can finalise a squad.
Let’s hope we get a bit of movement over the next day or two and can see things start to take shape.I can see Brooks heading out on loan.0 -
It's critical we keep the page count up, team. Every bit helps4

I can't, NJ loves having 3 keepers, it's why we brought him in when we let AMB goThemightyath2 said:Sage said:Current players that would count towards the 25 man squad limit:

Burke comes off at Preston concede.MarcusH26 said:
Would be perfectly happy with that in either formation. Burke just feels like a waste for 15 games a season when he's actually fit.Sage said:
In theory, once Edwards is back we have 6 centre backs including Gough as Bell moves back to that left centre back position.MarcusH26 said:Shame no one would probably take Burke with his injury record. Would be fine with Gough as the 4th CB.Burke comes off at Swansea (H) concede.
Burke comes off at Pompey concede.Burke comes off at Blackburn concede.Burke comes off at Wednesday concede.Burke comes off at Swansea (A) concede 3.Not saying it’s a causation but 6/12 games Burke has started, we’ve conceded after he’s gone off. Not to mention 4 of those other starts kept clean sheets at Blackburn and Sheff U, scored at Sheff W and drew against Coventry who were the best side in the league. His injury problems are an issue but let’s pretend he isn’t a good player when he is fit. In no world should Gough be starting over Burke if he is fit11 -
I don’t think anyone is arguing he isn’t good or that Gough is better. Just that Burke is currently a waste of a squad spot because he isn’t fit enough of the timeCrispywood said:

The injury record is my main point. Can be the best CB in the league but if you're only getting 15-20 games out of him is it the wisest use of a squad spot.NabySarr said:

Burke played a decent amount of minutes in pre season comparatively to last year where we saw him for one half at Dartford, perhaps he's made progress with his injury & the club feel more confident in his durability?1

Tbf, multiple managers of teams likely to be around us came out and said basically exactly this today or in the last few days.Braziliance said:
I mean, he also said we are f'in minted and people would be fools or idiots to not buy season tickets, or something along those lines?NabySarr said:
Other than our manager saying it? Or that we’ve quite clearly been chasing Holsgrove all summer?Sword65pf said:
Have I once said or written that we are skint? I will leave that with you. My view is hypothetical but yours isn’t? Because nothing has happened to suggest what you have said is actually happening.NabySarr said:
Is it a very optimistic view or is it just what Nathan Jones has been saying on repeat for about 3 months? And being quite literally played out in public as we try and sign Holsgrove.Sword65pf said:
Very optimistic view I think, we shall see. Everyone knows we are desperate, we will be making do somewhere along the line, prepare to be underwhelmed.NabySarr said:
It’s really not that hard to understand. If we want to sign a really good midfielder, that player will probably have had interest fromSword65pf said:
So there is a midfielder somewhere better than we have( not difficult I suppose) that hasn’t been snapped up 10 days before the season starts waiting for us to swoop in?, more likely is that we are running out of options because we’ve tried to lowball every fucker.NabySarr said:
Exactly. Jones could have signed a midfielder on the 1st June if he’d wanted too, and probably on any day since then, but it won’t be as good as the midfielder we eventually bring in this monthPeaksAndValleys said:
Don't think the right approach is to have 20 names and move through them if they don't immediately sign. They obviously think there is a genuine prospect of signing the player(s) they are pursuing, and they are better than the ones much further down the list. Seems pretty sensible to me.Braziliance said:
This is the frustrating part. Every day that goes by is one less day without our potential new player getting to gel with the team, and potentially less potential points without match sharpness. People can say it's dramatic but we stayed up by 6 points last season and a good start to the season can set the tone.MrBurns said:Another day without a new central midfielder
We have known our league status since April, 102 days ago. We have known long before that that the glaring issue is in the midfield. It's bloody amateur we haven't got one in by now (it should be two tbh). You're telling me a Championship level club can't find a better midfielder than what we have in that time period, ready to sign when the window opens?
If all our plans have been based around a player who we have allegedly underbid for, I'll be so disappointed.
People will say it's bed wetting, or dramatic etc, but it's not. It is the most important position we need and we should have had 10-20 names ready to approach, and if we don't, I question our scouting capabilities.
Derby County ten days away and as it stands, it's almost certain Conor Coventry or Greg Docherty will be starting for us, maybe even both. Not good enough imo.
better teams. So they don’t sign for us in June/July, but instead of us signing someone worse we wait for the better player to realise we are his best option
They aren’t waiting for us to swoop in, we are waiting for them to accept we are the best move for them this summerProbably more likely to be true than the depressing hypothetical you have conjured up that we are skint and can’t sign anyone with our lowball offers
We also watched Lee Bowyer keep schtum when genuine crooks were running the show. I also witnessed Duncan Ferguson of all people eat a bloody vegan burger to keep his boss at Forest Green Rovers happy.
Managers can hardly say "we've barely got any money I am not being backed" as it will put off people potentially renewing season tickets or Charlton in general and will impact their job security.
End of the day, managers will say whatever they have to say to make sure their job is safe, that happens at almost every job in life, always a pinch of salt with these words. Nathan Jones is money first, not Charlton. Nothing against Nathan Jones here btw, if I was a manager, I would always protect my own interests first.
I will genuinely be stunned if we sign a good championship midfielder for a fee at this stage, stunned.3 -
Think Burke a decent player now he had a full pre season hopefully he will be an assist to usCrispywood said:

Amateur that we didn’t get all our rumours in before the preseason tour.
Words not deeds from the ITK as usual.4 -

Arsenal lost pre season game 3-1 yesterday the over reaction on talksport is up there with our fans over reaction to pre season .. it’s ridiculous0

Burke is currently 5th choice CB, jones and koumetio being first choice with Collins and bell the back ups, personally I would be absolutely fine with moving Burke on and having Gough as the 5th choice - would free up funds, wages and importantly a squad space to spend elsewhere.
Ultimately the issue will be that no team will take him on at his current wage given his injury history, which is why it was a bit silly giving him a 2 year contract in the first place.1 -
I can think of a few others I’d rather see ditched over Kanu.NabySarr said:
We need to get him out to open up the space for what we need to come in, we’re already struggling on registration space. Suspect we will have to drop our asking price this month until we find a takerThe Red Robin said:
He may need to play for us at this rate. What are the options? Godden, Kelman or Leaburn? Grant will play out wide, Mbick won’t be ready for the start of the season. I expect Tanto will be shipped out.YannTheMann said:Plymouth looking to sign Will Evans from Mansfield, another potential home for DK looking more unlikely, madness to me that none of the higher spending league one sides have picked him up2 -
I agree with this, but advise caution because it is rare for a young Academy graduate to have an untrammelled trajectory.Diebythesword said:
He will make mistakes, sometimes costly ones, but it could well be the three steps forward one step back kind of early career.
To me Gough at the moment has the makings.2 -
Its not necessarily who we want to get rid of, irs who CAN we get rid of. Olaofe, Burke, JRC are all ones i think we would get rid if we could. But the same reasons we don't want them means no-one else does either. The Red Robin said:

I thought Bell was pretty good when he played LCB last season and got injured regularly when he played as left wing back.NabySarr said:
I hope we don’t see Bell at LCB in a back 4 very much. I think Jones and Koumetio are the starters, if Koumetio can’t play then Jones will move across to LCB and then Sichenje or Burke will play next to himSage said:

Think Bell is there as a left back option and then will play LCB whenever we switch to a back 31
