What a wonderful evening and a great reward for the travelling faithful, who traipsed up to Middlesbrough on a Wednesday night. I'm struggling to think of a better defensive performance from a Charlton side - an absolute masterclass.

The team gave everything and the Doc delivered a phenomenal performance. He and Coventry must have covered every blade of grass. They are both exceptionally fit players and hopefully they'll have enough left in the tank for Saturday lunchtime. The first choice central defensive trio will presumably be restored and hopefully Chambers will be fine to start again. Nathan rotated the forwards, so they should be reasonably fresh.

Saturday will be an interesting game, although, happily, our 3 points last night has taken some of the heat out of it. Both teams are in good form and it's about time we got a result at the Kassam, having lost 4 of our last 5 games there. It would be great to go into the international break after the Norwich game having reached the 50 point mark.

Whats that sailing up whatever the hell the river next to Middlesbrough is...
We dont care, the battleship certainly doesnt care if its River or High Street, the signals once said: "Every man must do his duty"... Now they're saying: "Nathan Jones what a f**king masterclass"
The guns they're firing... Because Middlesbrough... You've been SUNK!!

I'll give you a clue what the river is.
A former Charlton player with the Christian name of Matt.   ;)
The river Godden again? Ole ole?

I wonder if the reason why we don’t see Harry Clarke as often on long throws is because he needs a longer prep time compared to someone like Carey who throws a touch shorter but can do it more consistently.

If the case, it’s a touch of genius to get the triple sub on between the long throw to give him ample time to get his muscles warmed up and ready to launch the ball.

Some of those stats are crazy. Football is bonkers at times. Unbelievable result that.

On train to work with a smile on my face. Brilliant
That saucy older sort with the short skirt and tight jumper get on at Mottingham and sit opposite you again?

Why are our highlights from the club the bare minimum ? Sky is longer, Boro's is longer EFL is 10 mins !
Might be wrong, but I think our official YouTube account only ever posts the 2 1/2 (approx) highlights.

I usually go for EFL these days as they will post an extended version of 10-12 minutes for championship games.

Loved reading their forum on the link i posted a few pages ago.

Love the fact they criticise us in a phrase "low block" that i have never heard of before.

I assume those same fans will criticise their club if they go up and they dont go gun ho, when they are away from home in the prem next season.

Nathan Jones is an acquired taste. However the actual result last night justifies his decision making, and the result came about because of the work he has put in to the players and culture of the club since he arrived.
Nathan’s florid twitchiness and reactive nature is part of the package if it is results you’re after.
I once asked my eldest if he would rather have a beautiful Triumph Spitfire broken down on the side of the road waiting for the AA, or a dull Nissan Micra plodding to the destination.
Aesthetic aspiration made him say the Spitfire, but reflection made him say the Micra.
Micra all day long.I live analogies.this one is perfect

I was buzzing like most Charlton 'fans' after the stats busting winning performance the other night BUT...

Certain aspect of "Defensive Masterclass" is correct: Getting blocks in and 11 men behind the ball at times and the keeper dominating his area (other than the collision with Coady !)

But giving the ball back to the opposition when caught on the ball is in no defensive professional coaching session I've watched or youth training I'd taken!
Unless you have a session of attack against defence which Wednesday night was, for large parts of the game.

I want CAFC, like Nathan does as well and surely we all do, to see a Charlton side with the ability to pass and move and keep possession and NOT keep giving the ball back especially in and around the box; TC has taken enough stick but his first contribution was a poor pass on the edge of our area. I have no problem when under pressure for long kicks down field though trying to find a forward would be advantageous!

Fantastic 3 points but we still had to rely on the Profligacy of the Middlesbrough players in our box and the sub Castledine in particular who managed to get on the end of some great crosses but missed 3 headers which should've hit the target.

Massive relief that barring an injury crisis CAFC will be in the Championship next season. 👏🏻

Whether you are the super optimistic Callum or the censorious Billy mix or the rest of us in between you must realize that we need to evolve into a better passing side and not constantly get caught in possession; this must be a Shay Given.

I love the spirit of our squad which is epitomised by  Clarke who like other fans, I desperately want Charlton to sign.
Harry has the right character, passion and skill that is required for progress into a Championship solid team.
Couldn't agree more @soapboxsam . It was a spectacular and satisfying win but so much strain on the defence for so long is not an efficient use of resources. We may notice a strain on certain personnel at Oxford, specifically i think the midfield where we are shorter on replacement options.

We've seen similar games before, and it is a feature of our game i think where we are wasteful in distribution from vital areas (i.e. edge of box) and in moving through the final third of the pitch. The ball comes straight back. It needs to be worked on, and the coaching team must be very aware of it (!?).

You're allowed to rewrite history in football.

I definitely enjoyed that defensive masterclass in our first season back in the Championship, after Gillesphey's belter of a free kick in the top corner at Wembley last May.

  • Can you imagine what it was like to hold my nerve and not cash out?
Indeed. Always a chance we would nick a second.

We played much better football against Wrexham and Brum, so it's not totally alien to us.
Trying to outplay Middlesbrough though would've been like a journeyman fighter trying to outbox Sugar Ray Leonard.
Trust in NJ to pick the team and tactics, he's done ok so far this season with a more limited squad than most have in the division.
Who knows how we line up against Oxford?

I think Boro are the most fluent team in their passing and movement in the Championship so it makes perfect sense to play the way we did. As has been said, we were the better team against Wrexham and Birmingham which shows we don't have to play so negatively. I suppose it it a case of horses for courses. We also have to acknowledge that Jones took the risk to prioritise the Oxford game in terms of personel which also points to us playing that way. It worked and there is some evidence that it has worked for other teams at the Riverside. I hope we are a bit more positive tomorrow as I think that might be the better way to go against Oxford.

Jones has complained about the league fixtures and I think he has a point. We have two consecutive away games, one of which is about as far as you can go on a weekday and those games are Wednesday to early kick off on Saturday. It explains the way he set about it and it has been a real bonus we got the three points on Wednesday.

With the team he picked and away at Boro’ who lets admit are pretty good NJ tactics were bang on and the result shows it. No way were we going to play an open game, but we played our game very well.

Some teams and their fans are so deluded in this division, they think they have an automatic right to win every game no matter who is in front of them.

Middlesbrough are one of them as are Ipswich. They fail to give us credit that as a new club in this league with the fraction of the budget they have, we are still finding our feet and rebuilding the whole club.

Maybe a dose of not going up might make them feel a bit more decent.

They’ve had nine consecutive years of not going up Chips. I’d rather they get 2nd than the Scum.

Very pleased with the result and agree with many that it was a great defensive display.

However, we have to be honest, Middlesbrough missed the target from inside the box multiple times and got a number of free headers. Castledine made a particularly strong contribution to our clean sheet.
Yep, there was an element of luck, in that Castledine appears not to be able to get a header on target to save his life, pretty much every shot they had on target was aimed straight at Mannion's midriff, and when he did have a rush of blood to the head and tried to go through 3 of his teammates in an attempt to get the ball, he was able to recover quickly enough to collect the follow-up. Coady was not quite so lucky :)  That said, we absolutely earned that luck as a team, worked our arses off to keep Boro out of our box, block crosses and shots, and win free kicks to take the pressure off for a few seconds. It wasn't pretty, and I really wasn't sure we could hold out for as long as we did, but every single one of them should be proud that we did.

I’m sure this has already been discussed to death but have watched Kelman’s first have chance back a few times, it looks as though he’s tried to put the ball back over the keeper and into the far post, when it looked easier to put it under the keepers arm/body and into the near post?

What a knob robbo is. I hope Millwall fuck it up.

Hopefully robbo555 is ok and not feeling too fragile right now after bottling it against Blackburn as usual.
Maybe @MillwallFan can check in on him and pass on our condolences.
We are all concerned about the poor lamb.
