Old van- Speedo problem

I’ve got an old Citroen Berlingo van that has a dial with needle Speedo. Occasionally the needle on the dial just gives up and points downwards then jumps back up again.
I was on the A2 this morning when it did it and I noticed that the acceleration dropped and then came back as the needle pointed to the speed again.
Any ideas what might be going on?
(I use my phone sat nav for speed just in case).

Sounds like the cable is on its way out.1

Would that affect the acceleration?guinnessaddick said:Sounds like the cable is on its way out.0 -
Did anyone else read the title as Old man speedo problem? 🤔23

Speed sensor? I think that might feed transmission speed to the ECU to generate input to the speedo.0

Thank you 🙏fattmatt said:Speed sensor? I think that might feed transmission speed to the ECU to generate input to the speedo.
Being old I can’t imagine it having any sensors!0 -

i cant imagine anybody in the right mind buying a Citroen Berlingo - does noone watch Youtube for the most unreliable cars on the planet? And dont tell me your 2nd car is a Fiat 500 ?0

I’ve done over 100,000 miles in the van and have loved every mile. The only vehicle I’ve ever had that will fit 90 chickens in the back and another 10 in the footwell at the front. Wouldn’t change it for anything.Zulu said:i cant imagine anybody in the right mind buying a Citroen Berlingo - does noone watch Youtube for the most unreliable cars on the planet? I could post a picture my wife took of me on holiday which would fit the description of old man speedo problem. However, I don't want to take responsibility for any trauma it may cause...Redvalleyeast said:Did anyone else read the title as Old man speedo problem? 🤔8 -
We appreciate your consideration in not doing so @Masterbrew6

I would say “Don’t count your chickens”, but they’ve already hatched :-)Arsenetatters said:

I had a similar problem in my car the Speedo went down to zero and the screen went blank. There was moisture in the electrical control unit.1

For the last 20 years I’ve taken my cars and van to a lovely local garage at the end of my road. They have been fantastic and have done stuff for free as it would take 5 mins to fix rather than make something up and charge me. They had a sense of humour and, even though I wasn’t entitled to a courtesy car they would give me a similarly old battered vehicle to drive around. They’ve been taken over and I don’t feel the same trust (yet) so can go armed with some information.2 -

This is good news / I’ve looked it up and the bit I need is less than £50 and just needs to be changed and plugged in. So I shouldn’t expect a massive bill.Thank you all!3

Dodgy speedo but a self driving van, very impressive! Needs a few chickens in the passenger seat to complete the imageChizz said:

I suppose you could get an old tom tom which shows your speed if it isn't worth fixing the speedo. I don't think it would affect an MOT as it is not a tested item but stand to be corrected.1

Have that @Zulu. You obviously weren’t checking out the YouTube videos where they did the chicken capacity tests.Arsenetatters said:

I remember the joke how many elephants can you get in a mini, two in the back & two in the front, never heard how many chickens can you get in a berlingo.SuedeAdidas said:

Had it from new for 13yrs. Never had any problems with it in all of that time.
Part exchanged it when we bought Eric O’Dwyer our new EV Jeep Avenger a year ago.1 -
