PNE Gentry Day at The Valley

Evening all,

Just wanted to share a bit of background ahead of North End's visit to The Valley on Saturday 11 April.

Many of our supporters will be attending in bowlers, suits and pinstripes for Gentry Day.

From the outside it can sometimes look like a themed away day, but the important thing is that it is not fancy dress. It is a tribute.

Gentry Day is a long-standing Preston North End supporter tradition rooted in remembrance and respect.

The name goes back to the 1970/71 season, when Alan Ball Snr referred to North End supporters as “the gentry”, and the modern Gentry Day tradition returned in 2005 in memory of PNE supporter John Tracey, who was one of the original Gentry.

Charlton also has a place in that history. One of our earlier Gentry Days was at The Valley on 21 March 2009, which was over 15 years ago now. Back then only a minority of our support really took part compared with today, where it has grown into something the majority of the away end gets behind.

So if you see a stand full of bowlers and suits next week, it is meant in a good-natured and respectful way. There is always colour and atmosphere to it, but the deeper meaning is remembering those no longer with us and carrying on a tradition that means a lot to North End supporters.

Hopefully it adds something a bit different to the day, and we look forward to coming back to The Valley.

All the best.

THanks for the warning. A crowd of Mr Benns in the stands and as if by magic your guys will come out of the changing room as world beaters like you've never seen before.

@TheGentry thanks for sharing the info. Had read about it so will be interesting to see in reality at The Valley.

Just to make you aware, there are a few final places available still for PSA (prostate cancer) testing pre match on Saturday. Open to all men over 50 - need to book in advance at £15:

Bowler hats and pinstripe suits you say?

That's just normal everyday work attire for some of us.

I think I read about it in WSC a while back. Fantastic stuff - a Swords Alive has indicated, you can be fairly sure that the performance on the pitch won't spoil your day.

Fair play to the nobbers, this is a great tradition and looks really good.

Hope they get smashed on the pitch though

Thanks for all your positive comments.

Most places we visit embrace it with home fans and North End fans getting along.. (strange I know).

We are looking forward to a lovley sunny day in the smoke.
