  • Do your friends still introduce you as ‘this is Clive… he once had a decent game at Wembley’?

Clive, me and my wife met you in a Chinese restaurant in Bexleyheath one lunchtime many years ago … do you still eat food?

Steve Brown has told me he'd love to have Clive at the Valley and involved with the Ex-Players Association but has been rebuffed when trying to make contact.

Happy to pass on @Ricocafc 's contact details @MuttleyCAFC

I'll speak to my brother about it and get back to you. I think the event might have helped as Clive got a feel for the love we have for him. He thought we would have forgotten him! He was honestly excellent and really got into it and had lots of great stories. Not just about Charlton but the hardest player he has played with, his penalty system, why he was at Grimsby for so long, his favourite Wembley goal etc... He hasn't done one of these before so that gives you an idea. My brother drove up to Sunderland last year which helped.

He is a really humble guy. I remember him coming back for the Legends match at The Valley as part of CACT’s anniversary celebrations. He wasn’t able to play a big part in the match but came on in time to take the winning penalty to roars of “super Clive Mendonca”. He was genuinely surprised and overwhelmed. And then had to dash off to get his train back up north in time for his night shift at the Nissan factory.

Crazy that he thinks people will have forgotten him. He played for us 25 years ago, not 65.

If you score a hat trick at Wembley for a club then they're not forgetting you.

Shows how good Carlo was then that Clive could form that opinion in just over a dozen games.

How Clive explained it, he really enjoyed playing with Carlo and he suited his game. It was a surprise when he suddenly left for Wimbledon.

Leaburn had been out of contract for 18 months so it was hardly a surprise that he left

I think it was a surprise because one minute they were playing together and doing well and the next minute he was gone. He isn't based in Essex, he is in Sunderland. He was staying with a friend.

No, I picked him up from Essex after the game. My brother promoted the event and I helped free of charge and it was an honour to meet my hero and it was great to have a long chat with him, especially as my sat nav was playing up a bit so the drive took a bit longer than planned. He is a really nice genuine bloke and very humble. What shocked me a bit was that he honestly didn't appreciate how loved he is by us. I think those who attended showed our love singing SuperClive at every opportunity and I think he really enjoyed it and got really into it which was great seeing as he doesn't do these sort of things. It was great hearing his stories. I tried my best to convince him to get in touch with Steve Brown about visiting the Valley next season and he wasn't totally against it. Might be worth Brownie working on it. He could contact Ricocafc if he needs some help. But no guarantees. Clive thought some will have forgotten him and some might like him and some might not. I told him I was at the game today and from my seat I could see three people with Mendonca on their backs and everybody loves him and he would get a truly great reception. I told him I have a picture of him by my bed (my wife is ok with that) and another in the house.

They say you shouldn't meet your heroes but that is a load of nonsense based on meeting Clive. My problem is I can't clean the passenger seat now!
The man is a god- he would get the loudest roar if he came back to The Valley, tell him that from me. He is a living legend!!!!

If he thinks we’ve forgotten him, we should ask ’Have Sunderland fans forgotten Kevin Phillips or Niall Quinn, and did they have any one game that comes close to what he did?' There’s The Matthews Final and The Mendonca Final. Who else comes close? Ian Rush, maybe. Edit: Geoff Hurst.  Anyone else? Let’s stick to Wembley finals.
