Wonderful player, and like his brother a Scotland and Lions legend.
RIP Scott

Shocked at this news.

Great player, another taken by the cruel disease far too early.
Brian Moore:
"Those of you who did know Scott know what we've lost. Those of you in the wider rugby world who didn't know him - let me just say rugby is much the poorer for his passing, but very much the better for his being."

I am very shocked by the news. I watched him play for Scotland many time - his defensive play in the 1990 grand slam decider (against England) was immense and part of a very memorable day. Very poignant he died on his late wife's birthday

Absolutely shocking, devastating news. A fine player for both Scotland and a catalyst in the extraordinary Lions win against the Australians in 1989. It's worth pointing out that, in that series, the Lions suffered their biggest ever defeat against Australia in the first Test; Hastings came into the team for the remaining two Tests, helping the team to a 2-1 series win.
Thoughts are with his family, who have to come to terms with losing both parents in different, but tragic circumstances, in such a short period of time.2 -

Did radio punditry during the last 6 Nations, no hint of illness. Was a very tough and brave, probably underrated (in the shadow of brother of Gavin) player, very sad to hear thIS NEWS .. R I P1

I believe he fought it off once but it returned and the nature of the cancer, affecting white blood cells and fighting infection, meant if he took a dramtic turn for the worse, which seems to have happened, he would not recover. I'm still in shockLincsaddick said:Did radio punditry during the last 6 Nations, no hint of illness. Fine player slightly overshadowed by Gavin as @Lincsaddick mentions.
Tough task for Brian Moore on probably his last live broadcast to give an impromptu obituary.

This has been a tough one as we know the family.
His original diagnosis was around 4 years ago before his wife took her own life and that became very tough for the kids.
This will impact them hard and sure the wider family will support them.
He was such a nice guy and always had time for a chat.
Our thoughts and wishes to his kids.5 -

Maybe I should have been, but I was not conscious of the cause of his wife's death. How Scott coped with that grief while undergoing treatment for Lymphoma is unimaginable. Their poor children - just unfathomable. Love and thoughts to Corey and Kerry-Anne.3 -

Condolences to all family, friends and acquaintances.
It's heartbreaking for the adult Children who had lost their mum from her depression and now their Dad Scott who was an excellent Scottish and British lion rugby player like his brother Gavin.
Scott Hastings did so much for the Dodie Weir MND foundation.
