Probably thought it had been found by an old person and they had put it up there to be found, like they do with a teddy or child's shoe when they find them and put them on a low wall or railing.iainment said:

Have a soft spot for them, best mate is a Gooner and so is my brother in law, and I've been there more often than he has. They set out to win the League and they did, it wasn't always pretty, but that's where we are in football's evolution (last year's travesty of an FA Cup Final should be exhibit A - fluke a goal, 11 men behind the ball and crap refereeing). It's up to other teams to work out how to negate the way they play, just like they did with City.
There's a reason Arsenal are the biggest London club and it's partly based on geography, they draw support from near the ground (Islington, Camden, Hackney, Haringay) , NW London because of transport links and South London for historic reason, and increasingly from overspill areas like Herts and Essex. If they hadn't moved to the wrong side, we would probably not be as big. They also have a big support among people of Irish, Caribbean and Asian heritage, because they are seen to be more inclusive, especially if you compare to the next biggest club in London, Chelsea, who have had issues with high profile racism among their fans. Now if you don't have historic links, and want to support a team, you can choose a local one, but if all you know is the Prem you'll choose based on how welcome you're made to feel around other fans. Chelsea had a a lot more success attracting African support after the success of the African players they signed in the 90s/00s, but so did Arsenal.
Two things though, if Arteta goes, will they be in for Jones?
And I heard someone singing "North London Forever" after the Final, outside Brockley station. What is it about the WIndrush Line that no team at either end knows any f***g geography!2 -

Even in the late 80s (when I started working in Old Street with a few of them), they were pretty blinkered to their own club then too.The Red Robin said:
Proper old school Arsenal fans are fine, it’s all the newer fans that couldn’t point to The Emirates on a map that are annoying.Bedsaddick said:They are insufferable.
As I’ve probably mentioned elsewhere, Willie Young fouling Paul Allen in the 1980 FA Cup Final (I supported West Ham when I was 10) and Andy Peake not getting a pen at Highbury in 1988/89 (who fouled him?) has added to my dislike of them.2 -

Because they "steal" "fans" from clubs like ours.killerandflash said:I have no feelings towards Arsenal either way. They're not my rivals.
It's a bit like the " anyone but United" comments 20 years ago. Why should I be bothered by them?
Most proper fans never change allegiance.
Not talking about fans changing teams, just fans from our catchment area who might have been Addicks choosing to follow them.

Hardly. The sort of plastic fans who support Arsenal, would follow United, City, Liverpool, Real, Barcelona etc if they didn't exist.Algarveaddick said:

This thread is about Arsenal, but United, City, Liverpool, Real, Barcelona etc are exactly the same and I feel the same way about them.

Not sure who tripped him, but the bastard referee, Alan Seville, will remain etched on my memory for all time...Afternoon Delight said:

Ironically I fall in to a small set of fans who charlton stole away from Arsenal. Growing up as a kid, my father liked football but wasnt from Britain so never really had a team, my mother had a passing following in west ham but no real allegiance and as the youngest of 3 I followed my 2 older brothers in supporting Arsenal.Algarveaddick said:blackpool72 said:

Then at about 13/14 my dad decided he would buy a season ticket to a local club and decided on Charlton, we started going and my resistance lasted 2/3 games then I came out the closet to my family as a charlton fan 🤣🤣 fortunately they were supportive. My brothers insisted it was just a phase and I should just be left to it but am still here 23 years later. Funny enough someone else I go with to matches when im back in England was a Man Utd until similar age and then started going Charlton and became a fan.
I think with fans who grew up during the mass commercialisation fo football you will see a lot more stories like this.2 -
A geezer I know out here is from Canning Town.
He pretty much knows zero about Charlton, he 'supports' two teams, Man United and Real Madrid!!!!!!!!
I have not bothered asking him how many times he's been to Old Trafford.1
