No, they can celebrate cycling by doing 25 teeny cyclists all a part of a community right down the bottom end by the skateboarders where no one goes.

I had read the greenwich wire article in advance so the Enderby, Angerstein came just after Charlton, as they should imo.

Crappy way to decide what to put in it as most people won't know to respond and 3/4 of those who do respond will have no idea what the options mean.

It's an odd list to choose from.

If you haven't read the accompanying article, who is really going to know the legacy of the gasworks, the cable factory, the Angerstein wharf etc?  I sense that those choices might feature at the bottom of the list.

It's also a pity that the nearby library, donated by Andrew Carnegie, and the old fire station don't feature.

My choice would be the flyover itself.  I went off to Uni in the early 1970s and when I came back they had transformed the area I grew up in by building the tunnel approach road.

    Bastards.
My Grandad worked on the cables so I know about factory.

    Excellent.

Although I think you might be in a minority ... unless your Grandad had lots of kids.

My Grandad worked at Woolwich Arsenal, so I know about them.

You'll have to widen the flyover.

Done, turn phone sideways seems to make it a bit easier
Thanks for your help everyone, but this is the winning answer. I was holding my phone portrait and only columns 1-4 were visible! Now, off to the Things That Make You Feel Old thread...

    Done.

No idea why “cycling” is included…those feckers are already being celebrated with their own right of way along the whole of the lower road, whilst inconveniencing every other form of transport for the last year and forevermore!!!  😉

And you still get cyclists on the fucking pavement when they have their own lane which has screwed up traffic along rhe whole road.

Put all 9 options on the mural so no one is offended

Great stuff. My vote went for the Gas Canisters, that would look lovely.

There is plenty of room for all the suggestions, they would not need to make it all the top one.

The actual site in question is the old Metrogas sports field.  The gas works were further down the peninsula ... where the O2 is now.  The playing field was one of the best in the area and I recall Greenwich Schools playing district matches there in the 1960s.

Here's the Metrogas history from Wikipedia.

Metrogas was founded in 1888, two years after the completion of the East Greenwich Gas Works, as a Works team for the South Metropolitan Gas Company.  Metrogas Athletic joined the Kent Football League in 1909, staying in the league for four years.  In 1913, Metrogas joined the Athenian League, finishing runners up in 1920 and 1922.  In the 1921-22 season, Metrogas entered the FA Cup for the first time, losing 2–1 at home to Norwich City in the fifth qualifying round.  In 1923, Metrogas joined the London League, finishing 11th in the Premier Division.

In 1987, Metrogas joined the Spartan League, joining the Intermediate Division.  Metrogas remained in the Spartan League until the 1993-94 season.  In 2005, Metrogas joined the Kent County League.  In 2014, Metrogas won the league, retaining the title the following season.

Upon their foundation, Metrogas played at the Metrogas Sports and Social Club in Horn Lane, Greenwich and Metrogas later moved to Devonshire Grove, off the Old Kent Road.  Metrogas' first team used to play at the Metrogas Sports Ground in New Eltham, before the club confirmed a groundsharing agreement to play at Sporting Club Thamesmead's Bayliss Avenue ground in May 2021.

Famously, we played at the Angerstein Athletic Ground (just off Horn Lane) until 1915.  I've found it difficult to find old maps with the Angerstein venue mentioned specifically, but maybe the Museum curators have been able to do that.  However, here are some screenshots of maps of the Metrogas ground from 1914-ish and 1938-ish respectively.

    1914

    1938

The Metrogas ground of the 1960s was situated in that open triangle just to the left of Horn Lane and Fearon Street and the rectangular building up and right (by the 'H' and 'O' of 'Horn') is described as a pavilion in later (1952) OS maps.  Those also feature tennis courts and a bowling green.

Much better now, though.  Sainsbury's petrol station and a car park.

The boys that formed the club came from the East St area -

And in 1916 The Valley was still a sand and chalk pit -

So that indicates that the Angerstein Athletic Ground and the Metrogas ground were one and the same.

And that's not surprising as you wouldn't have a proliferation of football grounds in such close proximity.

@Henry Irving ... have you found any map references to the Angerstein ground?  I ask because the area marked as '4' on your map was still known as the Metrogas ground in the 1960s, and presumably had been since 1888.
