Question Henry. Is that “maroon” coloured jersey legit or has as I’d assume it been colourised at some point and it might not actually be as maroon as all that ?

It has been AI colourised hence the wrong colour.

The personal recollections of those players clearly state that they dyed the shirts they bought red.

you can see the delight in their faces , it's almost as if it's a picture of current day Charlton fans,  enthralled at the prospect of more exciting Jonesball football next season

Transfer budget of over 14 shillings and eightpence ... and what did they do with it?

Does anyone know why William Bonner was called "Porky" - there doesn't seem to be an ounce of fat on him!

    I’m guessing that’s probably why.

My guess is that his dad was the local butcher but it's a guess.

IIRC  (read it somewhere) when they went to the sports shop in Woolwich to get they kit, red was the only colour there. The above “red” is similar to that  Woolwich Arsenal wore.

Some of these had very long careers with Charlton. I can remember Thomas, Marshall, Hughes, Smith, Crawford, Mills and Booth all playing since WWII.

Sudds is a great surname for a working-class Londoner. You expect to see it in fiction or movies but not in real life.

  • I witnessed this team play. It was almost as memorable as the 7-6 game.
