Keeping injured players on the pitch

Personally, irrespective of whether we have any substitutes available, I disagree with keeping injured players on the pitch just 'because we have to'. We don't have to.

That includes Edwards, Bell, Godden, Sichenje and Docherty, who were all told to stay on. Some have since required surgery. The others have suffered medium-term injuries as a result of what could have been short-term ones.

    Totally agree

Gone are the days when you sent the injured player to play up front & to just "be a nuisance". With 5 subs allowed there should always be an option to sub a player off. And if you've used them all up inside 75 mins then more fool you.

This is something I feel needs discussing, especially after reading the Godden interview in the SLS this morning. 5 instances in one season that you've mentioned above, Lloyd Jones has also been on the pitch many times this year when he probably shouldn't have. Then there was the odd circumstance around Leaburn away at Wrexham, I don't know if the full details ever came out but something clearly happened and the way Jones spoke in the interview afterwards didn't sit quite right.

We've made huge progress under Nathan the past 2 years, having players willing to play through injury is admirable but I don't want to see this trend continue, ideally we recruit well enough to not need to ask players to do this.

    Agree.

They didn't take any such chances with Declan Rice against Croatia even though it seemed like the kind of game stage where he was really needed

In the modern game, players are trained to the edge of the bodies physical abilities. So I think that a more cautious policy to injury is taken. If there is any doubt about the seriousness of an injury the player comes off.
We have seen players who you know are struggling as their performance drops off, but the manager still keeps them on. Then we find out they made the injury worse and they are out for weeks if not months.

With more subs allowed now, managers just use them either to correct a poor team selection or to have planned "finishers" coming onto the pitch at a set time. As a result, teams seem to be just as vulnerable to late injuries as when they were only allowed 1 or 2 subs.

England were able to make the sub though, as they hadn't either used all their subs already or used all their sub windows. We weren't able to replace Godden as we had already made all 5 subs. If we'd known how serious the injury was, I assume we would have taken him off and finished the game with 10 players.

It seems that Yeremy Pino played on with a broken collarbone last night, as Spain had used all their subs.

And Reece James played on with a hamstring issue for England against Ghana for the same reason

On the flip side, he's been having injections for well over a month to get through Arsenal games.
