Spotting a theme there @Stig
There's loads in We Didn't Start The Fire by Billy Joel: Doris Day (singer as well as an actress), Johnny Ray, Liberace, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Chubby Checker, Bob Dylan and The Beatles (well, Beatlemania). Also not sure if Toscanini counts, as he was a conductor.
Jackie Wilson Said by Dexy's Midnight Runners: obvious
When Smokey Sings by ABC: Smokey Robinson, but the album version also references Luther Vandross, Sly Stone, James Brown and Marvin Gaye towards the end.

    Geno by Dexys as well.

Thanks for drawing my attention to this as I’ll admit that despite being rather a Dexy’s fan I was unaware that Geno was a reference to a real person. And I absolutely love that song thanks to @golfaddick

Geno Washington (born William Francis Washington; December 21, 1943, in Evansville, Indiana) is an American R&B singer who released five albums with the Ram Jam Band between 1966 and 1969, and eight solo albums beginning in 1976.

Now I’m going to have to check out the Ram Jam Band.

I remember that getting mentioned on Nationwide. One for the Things That Make You Feel Old thread, I think.

The Space Cowboy and Gangster of Love mentioned in Steve Miller's The Joker, are both tongue in cheek  references to Miller in the past. Maurice refers back to an earlier song of his which may also have a semi-autobiographical tone.

No Xmas for John Quays by The Fall is probably the only song to mention both Frankie Lymon and The Idle Race:
” And talking about Frankie Lymon
Tell me why is it so?
Tell me why is it so?
Out of his face with The Idle Race
Out of the room with his tune
