He may have had a bug but he was taking a huge risk. A player got sent of in this World Cup for doing that. VAR don’t accept a doctor's certificate to my knowledge.soapboxsam said:guinnessaddick said:
Good to see Argentina being good sports, Rice could’ve been sent off 3 times.
Rice is being a good sport ?
He had a bug and is trying not to pass the germs on by covering his mouth.
Or unless Declan has learnt some Spanish Swear words, because Messi doesn't speak or understand English.
Chelsea wanker and Liverpool wanker are fair comments to Fernandez and McAllister respectively.0 -
Why doesn’t it apply? How would you know if it’s abusive or racist, or not? The new rule was that you can’t put your hand over your mouth when speaking unless it’s to someone in your own team.killerandflash said:
If you're aggressively shouting at someone with your hand over mouth, as if you're trying to hide that you're saying something abusive or racist, then that's a red card offence.guinnessaddick said:

That doesn't apply here, or in photos of Bellingham elsewhere in the tournament.0 -

It has to be in a "confrontation" with another player.jimmymelrose said:

I dont know the exact wording of the rule, but it was always going to be a tricky one to implement. For example you could have two players from other teams who know each / are friends - having a chat. And the reason they put their hand over their mouths in this social media age will be to prevent fans of their clubs dissecting a private conversation.0

Exact IFAB wording: "... covering their mouth when communicating with an opponent in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory manner or situation."

What needs to be done is all those involved get a 2 game ban starting from now. Even a one game ban would suffice.CharltonManor1966 said:Just heard Martinez defending their antics with the 'malvinas' banner.
For a bloke who earns his living in this country that is quite shocking and something needs to be done.2 -
Not to overreact but surely they could have visas removed.MuttleyCAFC said:

Zero chance the woke mob in charge of the country would have the minerals to do that.AberystwythAddick said:

I dont know where he got the idea they would tire, they finish every game very strongly and have scored plenty of goals late on.If this guy was involved in the half time team talk,I think most of the players would have fell asleep.Chunes said:In his half-time interview, Anthony Barry said that as the game went on, Argentina would tire and we would use our "Premier league fitness, strength and athleticism" to exploit the spaces and create better chances.
That analysis makes you question if this coaching team has a clue. Our players were completely dead on 60 minutes and were out-battled and overrun by these ageing Argentinians.1 -
"They were more afraid to drop out of the tournament than having the excitement and hunger to win it"
Quote from Thomas Tuchel about England's performance at Euro 24.
Even more bizarre when he had an opportunity to put on pace to run at the Argentinian defence.0 -

i don’t think they should but could theyPeople are entitled to say the Falklands should belong to Argentina. I don’t agree with them, and it ain’t gonna happen, but I’d like to think we’re better as a country than revoking people’s visas for this sort of stuff.I’d encourage people to calm down a bit but I think quite a few on this thread have already passed the point of no return.6 -

Apologies if already posted but this breakdown from Andros Townsend is really good

I get the outrage at Argentina not being punished, but don't really get the outrage at them waving the flag. The Falklands aren't Argentina's, they're British as the Argies got smashed to pieces and surrendered... Find highlighting that a bit weird, just makes them look like muppets2
-
Looking forward to Spain winning and pulling out their Gibraltar flag on Sunday.8

The Argentines have a real chip on their shoulder regarding England, and they always turn up for big games.
I've crossed the Bolivia-Argentina border and the first thing you see is a giant board with their 'Malvinas' slogan. I've also seen Argentina play in Argentina and their fans sang "if you don't jump then you're English". They were playing Canada.
Everything was working against England in those last 30 minutes.2 -

But if an Argentinian player claimed it was provocative speech and complained to the ref, would you think it worth the risk? Anything you say could be claimed as derisory, especially as there's no proof. All situations could suddenly turn inflammatory.
If you cover your mouth talking to an opponent, you're asking for trouble imo. I'm surprised that the Argentinians didn't try it on.1 -

I agree if we needed a goal but we didn’t actually need him to produce anything, just threaten to do so. Enough to keep them honest going the other way was good enough.Alwaysneil said:
Someone like Madueke but not madueke hinself whi isnt good enough. Oh if onlh we had a young winger who looked outstanding in our last warm up game to bring on in such circumstances.Callumcafc said:I think hindsight… what could have been done differently?
- we score, we’ve played probably the perfect game to that point
- the players lose their heads and start going defensive all the way to the hydration break and we’re somewhat lucky to still be ahead
- Tuchel has the opportunity to fix it during the break, bring on some fresh legs and turn the momentum of the match but he chooses to feed both the English fear and Argentina pressure by subbing the pacey winger and goalscorer for a defender
If he had that hydration break back, you’d like to think he’d have approached it differently and instead brought on Watkins for Kane to run at their two centre backs on yellow cards, and maybe someone like Madueke for Rogers so that we have threats in behind on both wings too.2 -

Another one not even reviewed, was a clear booking and probable red, as you say,ct_addick said:Romero should have got a red card for his first challenge on Anderson…punched him in back of head
Said it at the time, what was the difference between that and the South Africans sending off in the first game of the tournament which was given after a VAR review.2 -
Off_it said:The thing about this "Malvinas" banner is that once FIFA sit down and look at it in the context of their own rules they will quite clearly .......... oh .......... hang on. I'm being silly here, aren't I?
The White House has spoken and as we know with this FIFA that means nothing further will happen. I doubt they even get a fine.
It's a little ironic that the White House, who stopped a mate of a mate of mine from getting into the USA at the border because he had written rude comments, re posted GIFs about Trump on his personal Social Media account, have said they believe in Freedom of Speech so stick up for the Argies though.3 -

I think the original banner escapade maybe turning into a bit of an own goal. The more the story of the Falklands is out there, the more people are seeing that Argentinas claims are nonsense and that the people of the Islands want nothing to do with them.1

The Argentinian government always uses the Falklands as a distraction from problems at home. Don't understand why the players are obsessed with it - not really part of Argentinian history.Baldybonce said:I think the original banner escapade maybe turning into a bit of an own goal.
