Feet

As you get older your feet become more and more an issue.

I’m 71, I have a bunion which has a great effect on my well being.

Are there any on here who have stuff that are of use to elders feet and how to help them?

I’m finding my feet and ankles are swelling up in the excessive heat lately.

Can we all agree now that no one puts any pictures of their feet on here.
    Thank you.

    Same here.
The most effective treatment is to lay on your back with your feet propped up higher than your heart.
More than once a day if you can find the time, maybe combined with a nap.

I am trying to be proactive and now see my podiatrist every three months. Hopefully that will stop the corns  I regularly get developing to the painful stage...

I'm every 8 weeks or so - amazing how it makes such a difference.

Weight plays a huge part as well, especially as you age. My legs are fine to walk for miles, but my feet ache like hell - carrying at least 3 stone too much doesn't help!

Look after your tootsies a least as well as you look after your face. My feet spend their days in hot, horrible work boots, they are big, rough but they get cared for like an infant.

Moisturise a few times a week before bed, always scrubbed with tea tree stuff in the shower in the morning and when I get home when they stink. Buy decent socks, bamboo or non-man made material only. Compression socks for plane journeys and don't stay sat on your arse all day. My mates dad lost one of his trotters recently because he had a cracked heel and that got infected, by all accounts infections in that area of the foot are responsible for a lot of people having one less foot than they should which made me feel like less of a gaylord for moisturising them and generally looking after them. If only because I don't want the logistical headache of wasting money buying two flip flops when only one is necessary

Having worn steel toe cap boots and shoes all my working life my feet are in remarkable condition. So wearing anything else was like walking on air.
No corns, no aches or pains, or that disgusting fungus that people seem so glad to share by sporting open toed footwear.
Clean them everyday, athlete foot powder between the toes. My size 11 are my pride and joy.
    (No knee issues either)

Get some photos up on certain websites and you can earn a few quid from them Ian.

As an aside, have you ever had a false toenail ejected from your balloon knot mate?

Surely the beauty of flip-flops is you can pop the “thong” part out, rotate the base, pop the “thong” part back in again and bingo you have a spare, or maybe even another for secondary/occasional use if the top was a different colour to the bottom?

I stood for 2hrs watching Garbage at the Roundhouse on Tuesday evening and by the end my feet were throbbing.

Mind, I do have something called peripheral neuropathy and that affects my feet.

No standing at gigs anymore, seating only from now on.

I got diagnosed a couple of years ago with Type 2 diabetes.

I have problems with my feet with the skin feeling tight/dry and some minor numbness. Does anyone else have this if so what do you do the ease them?.

    Any suggestions greatfully appreciated.

I recommend O'Keefes Healthy Feet to moisturise and soften skin on feet.

I am also type 2 so am very careful with my plates. I have problems cutting toe nails because impaired sensitivity means you can injure your feet without feeling it, so have bought a orphapedic 'drill' that gently file my toenail's. I find the numbness can be a problem. I remember I wore plimsoles on a beach in Sardinia a few years ago, and didn't realise that sand had got in my shoes. When I got back to the cabin and removed my shoes the soles of my feet red raw, bleeding and severely blistered, and because of the numbness I hadn't felt any pain. It cost me a fortune in gel pads and medication, and took many weeks before the skin healed.

After this I always make sure that I wear diabetic socks, never go barefoot, and always wear shoes approved for diabetics (I recommend the diabetic trainers that Gola do).

You should see your GP. The numbness associated with Type 2 can cause you a lot of problems. See your GP

A Podiatrist would be a good start - there will be one near you.
