It never rains but it pours... in this case literally

Well having waded through lots of grumpy posts on the England v Argentina thread last night, just as I was about to go to bed I discovered my toilet cistern had a crack in it and was leaking all over the bathroom floor. I had to wedge the ballcock so it wouldn't refill, and then flush it so it mostly emptied, but I'm still having to use a little bucket to catch the last few drips at the moment. I would describe it as a massive pain in the arse, but fortunately the seat is still ok.

So, what else apart from the England team has spoiled YOUR day?

So, what else apart from the England team has spoiled YOUR day?

We had a cracked cistern which we noticed in late January, when some mould started growing on the floor under the cistern.
We too had a container to catch the drips.
We thought the flooring may need to come up.
We bought a new toilet, the plumber fitted it in March and said the flooring was fine, so we paid him and he left.

The next day we stated to get a smell, which we couldn't really describe, maybe a sewer smell but not really.
The smell started as it got dark and built up overnight.
I called the plumber back (who we've used for 10 years) and he insisted he had fitted it properly and put some sealant around joints at my insistence, as he was adamant it was fitted correctly.

The smell continued, the plumber said there was nothing he could do, so I'm thinking it must be coming from under the flooring.

So we get a plumber/builder I know who comes at his earliest convenience (long story) on 4th June and takes up the flooring.
The underlay had rotted and it wasn't good, but I knew it wasn't the cause of the smell.

He leaves me another £1,000 lighter and surprise surprise the smell continued.
He too said he'd refitted it correctly, but I insisted he had not.

So I get him back after his holiday on 16th June, he takes the toilet out and says the rubber seal inside the connector had come away and that's why the smell was coming up from the sewer.

5 months and about £2,000 later it's finally fixed.

It's hard to find anyone these days who are fully competent and conscientious in their job.

(I could also mention conveyancing solicitors who as always simply ignore your e mails however insistent you become and incompetent fraud department bank workers who you give a starting fraud to them on a plate and they tell you it was an error and on and on).
I spent all day yesterday dealing with fraud and conveyancing and about 3 months so far on conveyancing work/advice that the solicitor should be doing but doesn't and he's a bloody partner.

Cheap but painful solution. No wonder they didn't refill. Just call a plumber.

    My plumbing woes.
Last week all of sudden no hot water. The boiler wasn’t coming on when called for. The emersion heater, which we never use, trips out so is useless. I got round this by putting the heating on for half a hour, not ideal considering how hot it has been this month. I had a card from a guy who is a Gas Safe engineer so I give him a call and describe the fault. He says,” have to check my diary.” Meaning I ain’t coming round.
I had pretty good idea it was the motor on a valve had packed up so I bought one fitted it and saved myself a couple of quid getting a man in.

No heating or hot water for you come october/November then when the heating comes on and you find you've fitted it  incorrectly and no plumber will come out to fix it as they have all just charged people £300 an hour and are off down the pub for some sniff at 12.30 every day.

Audi unable to look at a warning lamp showing “Pre Sense” unavailable, can’t look at car till late September.
Local lad stuck his his box of tricks, requires factory update.
Still September from Audi, but will do it while I wait. £55k car 2 years old less than 15k miles.

Pretty well impossible to get wrong fitting a synchronous motor with 2 wires and polarity doesn't matter. But I take your point, so I took the offer from British Gas £64 for the year. Covers everything just pay for the parts. I did have the same scheme with them up until this spring but they wanted £140 and would only reduce that to £120 with a moan. Just so happens I got the offer once I fixed the problem. I did in fact have them swap out a dud motor about 5 years ago so I was 99% sure what to do. I'm basically lazy and hate doing these annoying little jobs myself so if I get cover things rarely break down. (that's my thinking anyway)
