I was there 60 years ago today

Lucky you.
I was 12 years old,  sat at home watching on a black and white tv.
Took it for granted back then that England was a football super power that would always be in with a shout of winning it.
These days I look back and just feel privileged that it happened in my lifetime.

Similar and same age, should have been scoring at cricket, one drop of rain fell and game got called off, have great memories sitting there with mum and dad cheering at the black and white tele.

Talksport played the alternate ITV commentary of the last goal this morning.
That was weird, I'd never heard it before (and I doubt many others have too!)

Envious of those of you who were alive, especially those who were there. I remember being in Portugal in 2016 when they won the Euros, and the celebrations were fantastic. Such a great atmosphere. We've got so close on multiple occasions now, I would love to be able to experience what so many other countries have managed to.

How did ITV describe the final goal? The BBC's Kenneth Wolstenhome commentary is so iconic and so famous that it's arguably better remembered than the goal itself. There can't be many bits of commentary like that. Off the top of my head, the Norwegian 'your boys took one hell of a beating' rant is the only one that gets close. I think I've heard the ITV commentary before, but can't remember it at all.

Watched on my TV but had to catch a train to take me to the city for an anniversary dinner. The only problem was that the train was at 5pm. Missed extra time
When I got off train with my wife and caught a tube asked someone the score. I thought he was taking the piss until I found out later
The scene in the city with all different national flags. No trouble, brilliant

6 years old.  On holiday in Devon with Mum & Dad. Not many TVs about at holiday camps in those days & the one TV room was rammed. Listened to the game on the wireless sitting on the beach. I think the BBC did a full replay about a month later. Blessed that I grew up in the late sixties with England as world champions, although it was a shock to me as a 10-y-o in 1970 when they lost.

Actually I've just finished listening to Geoff Hurst on the Gyles Brandreth podcast Rosebud.  Did you know that Geoff was the last person to score six in a match?  A hat trick in each half V Sunderland 1968.  Not many people know that.  Geoff also played one first class match for Essex scoring nought and nought not out.

Frank Bunn scored 6 goals for Oldham in a league cup match in the late 80’s

I was 18 and watched it on a black and white TV at my girlfriend’s house in New Cross, along with her Mum.
Neither were really that much interested……bit of a mistake on my part.🫤
