Who is our key player for 26/27

If you can only pick one, who is the player our season turns on?

After the Second Tier podcast completely bottled the question for us (both guys picked Sonny Carey, describing it as a 'tap in' which apparently meant they had no analysis to back it up), keen to hear what people who actually know something about Charlton think.

PS no Holsgrove picks, unless/until he's signed!

    It has to be Jones
    Most influential player we have.

Grant, if he stays fit and starts most games, he'll get 8-10 goals IMO and they alone will move us into "comfortably safe", especially if the rest of our creative players step up

One of the next two signings, whoever they may be.

I dont think we've signed that player yet - whether its actually Holsgrove or not, this midfield addition is going to be the difference one way or another. Chalobah showed what we need our midfield to do (and I am not saying we should definitely sign him specifically) - but we need someone to start progressive moves and drive things forward from midfield, not endless recycling sideways-backwards-HOOF like last time.

    L. Jones also important but if we actually do go to 4 at the back instead of the old 3 5 2 he may not be quite as dominant/influential as before, though he will no doubt still be great.

I give the 433 about 3 games .  Maybe less if we lose to Reading and Cheltenham

And what about the 4231 we’ve actually been playing?

Ok, and who's going to be the starting XI and in what formation when we supposedly abandon it?

We really need our new CM to be a key player. Otherwise it's back to the old CMs.

Lloyd Jones key player in a slightly lop sided 5-3-2 I’d suspect .  If you mean the whole team, I’d say

    Kaminski/ Mannion

    Ramsay, Jones, Bell

McNamara, Carey/ Knibbs, Coventry, Docherty, Mesik

    Godden, Campbell/ Grant

We’ve known Jones quite a long time now .
  • Hopefully we haven't signed them yet - a decent ball player and who'll extract more from the players around him.

It'll be an innovative 7-2-1. The wingbacks on either side of the 7 will be nosebleed near the halfway line types.

Billy Koumetio.  A lot of our transfer business depends on us being able to adapt to the switch to a back 4. Lloyd has been brilliant for us for a 3 and at times spectacularly poor in a 4. Every time we've played a 4 under Jones even in L1 we've looked terrible. We know how good Lloyd is but he needs someone alongside him at his level. It won't be Ramsay or Bell in a middle 2 and Sichenje is more comfortable on the right so Koumetio turning up and being a left footed Lloyd Jones would allow us to utilise our wingers properly and set up like we want to. If not then we're suddenly looking at a fair bit of money spent on wingers we're not playing

We’ve never seen him again championship oppo so that’s a punt.

Well yeah, like all signings. His impact will dictate a lot of how we play; we'd never seen Lloyd Jones or Kayne Ramsay against Championship opposition either and they stepped up so we have to hope that he can or we're going to be seeing 352 again very quickly

Yeah but if the question is the "key player" its not a bad shout - not necessarily he'll be our best player but if it means L. Jones is still effective in a two instead of a three it will go a long way - and if they don't work out we will be in trouble whatever our midfield looks like.

As long as it isn’t Kaminski or Mannion as then it wouldn’t say much about the rest of the team.

    Lloyd Jones again ole ole…

if he is playing in a 2 rather than 3 we’ll see how well he adapts but believe he will be key in keeping us defensively solid again

Josh Key? When did he sign? It's a shame we released Paris Lock, they would have been a good fit.

Jones... The centre mid that comes in if we are talking about wanting to finish higher up in the table... But if the aim is staying up, it's Jones no question
