Charlton back up for sale - Guardian article comment from Gavin Carter p18

Calm down guysLooks like the paper headline of a sale was incorrect and misleadingSouth London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition has reached out to the club this evening to ask for comment on The Guardian’s article.Early indications from the club have been that nothing has changed since Slater’s story about them seeking investment, except that it is now a different company doing it.Charlton have since managed to consolidate their place in the Championship, avoiding an instant return to League One, with their women’s side promoted to the WSL, returning to the top flight for the first time since 2007, although staying there is likely to be costly. There is also an insistence that it would be counter-intuitive for GFP not to progress the club when looking for investment, that the focus remains on driving it forward, that their spend this summer is in line with long-term planning and will see an increase in wages spent on players.16

I think Golfie, if someone came in and wanted to buy the name of Charlton Athletic, and the players contracts, for a sum that this board think is acceptable, then it would happen. The board have tried once to increase investment with one company and failed and are now trying another, who apparently have no track record in Football. I still believe that the majority of interested parties would want the Valley as part of the club, that isn't going to happen anytime soon and the current board looked at alternatives, found none, and signed the lease agreement till 2040. The board have nothing to sell apart from a dream of Premiership football producing a quick profit, they are paying the bills and transfers in and out are happening, and unless they walk away with nothing, I don't see how it changes.golfaddick said:

I agree, it appears from reading the article that we are looking for investors rather than a full sale ?Marriott110 said:Potentially this new company tasked with finding investors have used the guardian as a method of finding an investor, in reading the piece they’re named within the first paragraph and highlights previous deals they’ve done so showing them to have a track record etc
They also couldn’t make a story out of the fact we’re after additional investment as it was old news so had to go for the full sale as to run with itMaybe it’s more hopeful as I don’t want to see another ownership change and all that goes with it after finally having some stable years3 -
Looking through Oakwell's conquests I note they 'helped' 777 a acquire a certain Standard Liege.
All rather familiar sounding stuff with the multi club stratagy 'benefiting' one and all ... (not).
I don't move in these worlds of business and advisers so could be wide of the mark, bur the flowery description of their roles worries me. We have successful businessmen running the club with their own teams and contacts, why on earth would you pay a small fortune to these middlemen who are pumped up with self importance?Oakwell produced an extensive background financial due diligence report on Standard Liege. Oakwell worked in close collaboration with Belgian lawyers and accountants to provide 777 with a comprehensive overview of the club, enabling 777 to submit an informed, competitive bid.
Douglas Harmer, Partner at Oakwell Sports Advisory said:
“We are proud to have advised 777 on this acquisition as they continue to build out their football portfolio. 777 now have a strong platform across Brazil, Italy, Spain, and Belgium to launch their multi-club strategy for the benefit of each of their clubs and their respective fanbases.”

If it is simply a case of the club simply continuing to look for additional investors for a percentage of the club but employing
a different advisory company, then Gavin Carter can confirm that pretty quickly. He will know that supporters are going to be on high alert given the experience of the number of ownership changes over the last decade.
However, I don’t think even he can guarantee that will turn out to be the case. There is always the scenario that an investor is only interested if they can buy 100% of the club.
Whatever, he is going to have to issue some kind of statement.3 -
Hoping for some communication from the club as soon as possible. Is worth noting that of all the times we’ve found ourselves up for sale/in limbo, this is the best position the club has been in of the lot.5

I really can't be bothered to go through this nonsense again. I hoped these owners were in it for the long haul.1

Two of our owners are Billionaires.
If the cost of running Charlton is approximately 15 million per year then that is little more than loose change to them.
So I have no idea why they are so keen to bring in extra investments.
Carter is little more than their mouthpiece and he will come out with whatever he is told too.
I seriously have no idea what our owners are playing at , but I no longer believe they want to be here in the long run no matter what Carter will probably come out with today.16 -
This surely cant be much of a surprise to anyone?
Any consortium that got sucked in by Charlie Methven was never going to be the full ticket.6 -
A convenient excuse now if our squad building doesn’t progress much further.Overseas investors always only it to flip for a profit when they can I suppose once the novelty wears off.
Difficult to see however they can leave with any profit after operating losses so maybe they just don’t see any medium / long term value and want rid of the financial commitment. But why anyone else would see it differently is the mystery. A buyer would ask why are you selling now.1 -
Have the owners been advised that 'unless' they spend big this summer, then the likelihood (not guarantee) that relegation happens this season is high. As such, their investments could be worth considerably less in 12 months, hence they are seriously considering selling now to avoid that prospect.
To use the much-loved CL house analogy; I've just spent three years having my house renovated and it's looking pretty good, but find out that a planning application will be decided upon in around 12 months time, for a waste tip being built at the end of my garden, thus potentially affecting the property value, I think I might be thinking of getting it on the market now.
All depends whether I love my house, or just see it as a place to live, and would just as happily, live somewhere else!1 -
I can’t believe they can’t find someone to invest £20m in to us and that same person will have the opportunity to put £3-4m in a year extra for the foreseeable, with at the present a real good potential for that to increase .
why is no one interested in investing in the money pit that is Charlton Athletic , I just can’t work it out .

They’ve been played by Charlie boy and they don’t like it. They’re not prepared to fund the club so it can be successful in the Championship and maybe promotion from it.blackpool72 said:Two of our owners are Billionaires.

Always baffles me that people (or investors) buy football clubs with the intention to make money.
Unless you take an underperforming Championship team or a league one team to the Premier league and keep them there for 2-3 years then you are not ever making money. And even then the profit is surely negligible as you will have likely lost a lot of money to get to the PL, and then spent most of your tv money on players/wages to keep you there.
A good recent example is Marinakis at Forest. He bought them for 50m, has lost a reported 250m, but they're supposedly worth over 500m now. But Forest are a rarity and even then they almost ended up back in the Championship last season which would've killed the valuation.
Steve Gibson (i know he's a fan and not an investor) has spent close to 400m of his own money on Middlesbrough and they've spent 16 of the last 17 years in the Championship.12 -

My opinion after reading the article from the Guardian is the current ownership is either they want to get out now before they lose anymore money or as we were when the article from the Athletic appeared to get more people on board so they can spread the debt
If they were that keen to buy a football club in this country then there due diligence was a bit shoddy to say the least. Not everything turns out like an Ipswich or a Wrexham and a loads of Americans (Not just at Charlton) are finding that the hard way through their wallets. The timing of the article last night is typical Charlton though.
Will the club put out a statement this morning?3 -
Reading Cawley's piece I suspect the club's stance would be that this is the same as before ie they are still looking for additional investment, as they said months ago (remember the "we've got £20m to spend" myth that came from the Athletic story), but the last agency didn't find anyone so they've gone with a new one.
Now, we can choose to believe that or not. We all have varying degrees of PTSD as a result of previous ownerships so I'm not surprised by the reaction to the Guardian story.
Whatever the real story is, the club "declining to comment" has only fuelled the flames and again highlights the need, IMHO, for an on the ground CEO and for the club to get ahead of the narrative.
Not having permanant staff at the top could be read as leaving the decks clear for new owners to appoint their own staff. It may be nothing of the sort and much more mundane recruitment issues but the delay/vacuum invites speculation.
There is also a question as to why the original agency failed and if the new one can do any better? Are we an unattractive deal, is the price too high or does the lack of physical assets put investors off?
Someone pointed out the Bolton owners sold a minority stake in their club this summer but why were they able to make a deal but not, so far at least, us?

The club isn't for sale. They just leaked this story to soften the blown of TC signing for Preston14

I think until this summer that criticism is extremely harsh. They’ve backed us very well up until this pointChippycafc said:Not been happy with our owners since they took over. Their lack of real investment on the playing front each window demonstrates this.
Just hope this doesn't unsettle the players. But I think we are in trouble this season.
I don't think so when you look at the clubs around us Preston, Birmingham, Wrexham etc have gone out and got some marquis players, both bought and loaned to improve their status. With the exception of Kelman its been Luton reserves, free transfers and anybody at a loose end.
Yes the pitch looks lovely but quite frankly you never hear a word from them.
How many more times are we going to have chancers as owners. One of the issues in my view of course is the asking price it's like bargain bucket football club that will only attract those that want to deal at that end.0 -
I have a question
I’ve read that this means players won’t sign new contracts and new players will run a mile! Why?
they are footballers with short careers. If the deals good, they will sign!

People who are saying not to worry just yet, for me the biggest evidence that they are truly selling the fact we are no where near ready for the start of the season. This mob clearly are actively looking to sell otherwise we would have invested in the players to keep us up this season.4
