Charlton back up for sale - Guardian article comment from Gavin Carter p18

So, are we buying a horse, or not?14

A tiny NJ snippet from Rich's latest substack. Pay the fiver for the rest...We have excellent owners, we really do. We think there is real sanity in our decisions and we have a direct line to them, which you wouldn’t believe how rare that is. If I need a decision made on something, I can get it within an hour - provided it isn’t seven o’clock in the morning and three AM in LA, for example.9
-
NJ “Last year, as was documented, we had probably the second lowest budget. With the teams that have come up now and the investment that is going on, we won’t be too dissimilar to that [again].
GC “We want to move the wage bill up towards the third quartile. Whether we will be bottom of the third quartile or top of the fourth quartile, I don’t know. We were second or third lowest wage bill last season.”
Which is it??5 -
-
Well the top of the fourth quartile in terms of league position is only 18th.
"Won't be too dissimilar" doesn't mean" the same".5 -
Carter also said we’ll spend similar to last summer - we’re nowhere near that are we? Even when you include Sichenje.3
-
Include Sichenje and we’re up to about £4m in fees. I’d imagine our wages are higher because of what players like Grant will ask for and what the three nearly out of contract might be asking for. And it sound like we still have two important signings to make (+Chalobah). We could easily get back to a similar spendThe Red Robin said:Carter also said we’ll spend similar to last summer - we’re nowhere near that are we? If when you include Sichenje.1 -
£8.9 million spent last summer (See the notes in the accounts published in March) plus a reported figure of £1.8m on Sichenje during the January transfer window
On fees (not taking signing on fees and wages into account) a reported figure of around £2m so far this summer2 -
Last season we spent 8.9M up front. The Red Robin said:Carter also said we’ll spend similar to last summer - we’re nowhere near that are we? Even when you include Sichenje. We’ve spent 3.8M so far (Sichenje included), + more money we probably owe from last summers transfers + players like Grant wouldn’t have come cheap. By the time we get the midfielder and winger in we probably will be1 -
It just doesn’t stack up that our rich owners got a year into the project, it was all going to or ahead of plan and they then started looking for additional investment - as others have said, they must have known the level of spend required and if not, they should have - I reckon this could all be a bluff to negotiate sharper transfer and wage deals - I bet every deal they do, the agent or other club is referring to how rich our owners are - the timing of that investment or take over (latest) leak just before we unleash the powder (now virtually dust) ????2

When we needed reinforcements in January, they stumped up and paid the going rate for the players that got the job done to ensure we didn’t drop - I think there are 2 budgets going on here - a sustainable permanent player budget and a January emergency fund or some of that emergency fund was this summers budget brought forward - the strategy may be good business but currently depressing the fanbase - 3/4 good signings in the next few weeks and that may change and I’ll start to believe they know what their doing after all.1

Diplomatic / Cryptic / Pulling the wool over etc all equate to a feeling that what you are being fed is a politicians answer and not the full story.Sword65pf said:
Not getting drawn in by you , seen you do it to plenty on here before, you take what I say however you wish to spin it in you’re favour, if I think he is a liar I would have said so. I think he is being cryptic in what he is saying, which sits well with plenty on this forum👍Henry Irving said:
Was does "pull the wool over people's eyes" mean then?Sword65pf said:
Didn’t call him a liar Henry, don’t start with the putting words in peoples messages. I’m talking about right now, and the response the potential sale of the club response.Henry Irving said:
Apart from two promotions, the stadium upgrades and new pitch you mean.Sword65pf said:Not certain mr Carter is using his good loyal charlton fan status to be able to pull the wool over people’s eyes. Hypothetically speaking of course. So far the actions aren’t matching up with the words, from anyone at the club.
Oh, but if we haven't signed a new midfielder quick enough that means Carter is a liar.
I think diplomatic is better than cryptic. .So you end up not taking too much notice of what you’re told because you don’t have full trust in it.I’ve no real truck with Carter btw, seems a decent bloke and a much better small investment but public front man than Michael Slater was.1 -
Slater though had Steve Kavanagh as Chief Exec and Varney as Executive Vice Chair effectively running the club, supported by experienced people like Chris Parkes, Mick and Rick Everitt etc.Not sure that’s there now tbh5

Genuine question.
Has a representative of the club categorically denied that the the club isn't for sale?
I am talking a statement like "the rumours are not true, we have a long term plan at Charlton, and we have no intention of selling this club, fans can rest assured."
As all I can find is "we are looking for investors and the owners have a plan" which isn't the same.

Because ultimately if someone looks at the investment opportunity and decides instead of buying in they want to buy them out, are they gonna say "no, sorry, I promised Braziliance 6 months ago that I'm not selling the club"8 -

That would be something like,
The Board has unanimously agreed that the club isn't not for sale.
It has come to the attention of the Board that some fans are of the impression that the club isn't for sale. We can categorically deny this rumour and are happy to clarify that the club isn't not for sale.
We would like all fans to rest assured that the Board has the best interest of its investment at heart. Furthermore, it's the intention of the Board to ensure that the facts are clearly set out, as follows:
1. The club isn't not for sale,
2. We aren't not looking for new owners,
3. The club not being for sale remains not to be an untrue statement,
4. Any future sale is not unpredicted, and
5. The club not being sold is definitely not a situation we're looking to avoid
We hope this clears the situation up, fully and finally.

I was just asking if anyone had read words to those effects, all the follow ups are unnecessary. You either have, or you haven't 😂2 -

It's not a bizarre hypothetical, why would they come out and say the club outright isn't for sale when it's not the case?4 -
Every club is up for sale at the right price. However, not every club has signed up two agencies to support them to sell it.14
-
Agreed - the bigger question is why after a year did they decide they wanted to sell it or ‘obtain further investment’ - people r splitting hairs over the wording - bottom line is we have owners who look very much like they aren’t interested in the long term if it’s going to cost them more than ‘x’ and the ‘x’ was clearly something they realised after about a year - it’s disappointing whatever way people want to dress it up - if you want to own a football club in the championship or premier league, you better be prepared to pay for it - that’s the way it is - we’re on a journey but only if it don’t cost much and we are happy with a packed lunchSELR_addicks said:Every club is up for sale at the right price. However, not every club has signed up two agencies to support them to sell it.4 -
No mate and they never will. Carter did openly say that IF someone came along and offered enough money for the whole club then it could be sold. Absolutely nothing wrong with that imo. In those circumstances I would say that 99% of clubs are for sale. I honestly think people are looking for issues where none existBraziliance said:Genuine question.

Also long term there will never be a denial about if a club is for sale as:
1. Every club for sale at the right price as others have said
2. Say someone wants to invest and acquire 20% of the club now, with a view to full takeover down the line if goes well etc, then if full takeover categorically is removed from the equation, that investment wont happen.
The Guardian piece spoke about 'investors' but lead with the headline 'Charlton for sale'. It was always going to be sensationalist and we will never know Friedman and Brener's views as they keep themselves to themselves, which I think is correct. We are always going to be sceptical, understandably so, but Carter has done what he can the address the piece.2 -
Carter's responses on Cawley's pod just need you to read between the lines. The club is for sale at the right price. However, the owners know they need to protect the asset and improve it to get best value. If in the medium term this means external investors come to the table, then they will entertain that proposition. He has said 5 year plan consistently. They are already a couple of years in - of course they are looking at their exit plan as any investor does.6
-
Brentford, Everton, Ipswich, Wrexham, Birmingham, Swansea, Palace have all added to their investor groups or added capital injections in the last couple of years.DOUCHER said:

They’d expect a higher premium now for a stake than when they took over in L1, so their own shareholding is worth more and £10-20m invested now in the Championship dilutes their own holdings less. It provides capital to spend and spreads the burden of costs/losses. It’s eminently sensible to do.10 -
Frequently. Offered plenty of measured and positive views on here. When we sign decent players, when we get good results, when the club does something right. It is a discussion board, and not everything I post is going to be positive.sam3110 said:

People love using that word "sensationalism", but I am not entirely sure they use it correctly. I am a realist. I don't say stuff to create a buzz or grab a headline (it's a Charlton forum, not a newspaper), I simply just say what I feel at the time. There are no plans behind the messages, just how I perceive what I read and then I reflect.
I meant the bizarre hypothetical was you framing it in a way where I personally expect explanations from the club when I didn't imply that.
Anyway, this is just how you talk to people online and not much is going to change that. Sure it works out really well in reality.3 -
