MATCH THREAD Cheltenham Town V Charlton Athletic: Carabao Cup 1 : Sat 8th August 2026 : KO 17: 30
Hi everybody, and welcome to the 2026/27 season, tonight we find ourselves in a rather strange situation imo, where we are involved in the Carabao Cup before we have even kicked our first ball in anger in the new season, not a great situation but there you are, we are stuck with it…maybe another "warm up" game, but a game we need to win at the same time
So we find ourselves with a trip to the West Country and a visit to The EV Charger Points Stadium and a Carabao Cup first round match with League Two opposition Cheltenham Town, a club from whom Alfie May joined us in 2023.
HEAD-TO-HEAD…We've played a total of 7 matches, winning 2, Cheltenham 3, and 2 draws, with a total of 9 goals each scored, Cheltenham did the double over us last time we met in the league 23/24 season, should the tie finish all square after 90 minutes, the winner will be decided by penalties with no extra time…
We will be sporting the brand-new purple third kit for the first time, so here we go…
Team news …Will Mannion starts in goal, with McNamara, Lloyd Jones, Koumetio and Amari’i Bell making up the back four. Chalobah joins Conor Coventry in central midfield with Tyreece Campbell, Sonny Garey and Grant playing behind Matty Godden.
Alli and Mesík are joined on the bench by Tiernan Brooks, Collins Sichenje, Greg Docherty, Alan Mwamba, Joe Rankin-Costello, Harvey Knibbs and Miles Leaburn.
Charlton: Mannion; McNamara, Jones (c), Koumetio, Bell; Coventry, Chalobah; Campbell, Carey, Grant; Godden
Subs: Brooks, Sichenje, Mesík, Docherty, Mwamba, Rankin-Costello- Knibbs, Alli, Leaburn

EFL broadcast rules dictate that the club is unable to live stream the tie, meaning audio commentary via CharltonTV is the best way to follow all of the action if you're not in Cheltenham.
Supporters in the UK and Ireland can watch all of the action live on Sky Sports+.

No Kayne Ramsay. The #cafc defender is set to be out for a few weeks with an ankle injury.

Will ask Nathan Jones after the match about him.4 -

Seems the rumour re Ramsay being injured is true
Kaminski dropped ??
Bell LB when Mesik is on the bench ?2 -
Wouldn't read into it... He wasn't in the squad vs. Cambridge this time last seasongolfaddick said:Kaminski dropped ??2 -
But @RonnieMoore said that Ramsay wasn’t injured and was starting?14

Would have started Knibbs and Mesik, but Bell won't have to go forward as much with Grant in front of him, and I suppose Carey does deserve to keep his spot4
-
Was interesting to hear on Charlton Live that Cheltenham have only played 3 friendlies and want to sign a few attacking players, so their fan couldn’t name many players that might cause us problems.
Should be no excuses with the team and subs we’ve gone with… but that’s never stopped us losing games like this before.2 -
Probably means their centre backs will score 30 yard screamers. Although Kaminski isnt playing so thats quite a bit less likely0
-
Just stay fit for the season Godden, would rather he was starting next week than today...2

Disappointing for Knibbs who been one of the shine lights in pre season …1

I would imagine they are all going to get good minutes. Really hope I am wrong but I feel we will be a bit undercooked based on our pre-season.0

Big fan of the league cup being the first game of the season... just to add13

Shame Apter is still out, would have been a good game for him to come on and show something. Shows how much we need another RW in asap3

I don't necessarily think this means Carey is ahead of Knibbs, more that he needs the minutes having been out ill.4

There seems to be this growing view (and not just from Ronnie) that Knibbs should play ahead of Carey. Why is that? Knibbs had some good moments vs Colchester, and I've not been able to watch some of the other friendlies. I hadn't got the impression he's done really well, is this more about Carey not being rated as his goals dried up towards the end of the season?4

Agree. Carey basically kept us up last season - those goals were unbelievably importantScoham said:There seems to be this growing view (and not just from Ronnie) that Knibbs should play ahead of Carey. That pretty much confirmed the exact oppositeCafcSteve said:But @RonnieMoore said that Ramsay wasn’t injured and was starting?2 -
Should be playing our first 11 & treating it as a warm up to next week. Players need to be playing as a team & working on getting to know how they work together. No point Carey playing today & then Knibbs taking his place next week.2
-
Mistake re Jones surely as he's at West Ham today getting ready to sign. Could it be Nathan himself stepping in as captain?
@Cafc451 - can you shed any light?0 -
Any streams kicking around for this? Thanks to the EFL’s daft rules I can’t watch on CharltonTV despite my local Carabao Cup rights holder deciding not to show this match.1

As I can't see it on the schedule, I'm guessing it's not available on Sky Go. Can anyone confirm?eastterrace6168 said:EFL broadcast rules dictate that the club is unable to live stream the tie, meaning audio commentary via CharltonTV is the best way to follow all of the action if you're not in Cheltenham.

Has anyone got Sky Sports + working yet? I eventually found our match but it says starts 5.15 and nothing yet?0
