MATCH THREAD : Charlton Athletic V Derby County : Saturday 15th August 2026 :KO 15:00
A warm welcome home to one and all for this 2026/27 season opener…
After the encouraging performance last weekend and the 3-1 Carabao Cup win at Cheltenham which bought us a second round tie with Spurs away, we are back on the Championship trail today for match No1 with Derby County visiting The Valley, in what I feel will be a real test against a team who finished last season a couple of places outside the playoffs in 8th spot, picking up 20 wins, nine draws and 17 losses across the season, they come here today having lost 2-1 at home to Lincoln City in the first round of the Carabao Cup last weekend.
HEAD-TO-HEAD…We've gone toe-to-toe on 93 previous occasions, winning 32, the Rams 40, and the remaining 21 fixtures resulting in draws, Derby ran out 2-1 victors when we last met at The Valley in January 2025, with Bobby Clark netting the winner for the visitors.
Ben Speedie will oversee proceedings this weekend, he took charge of 42 games last season, dishing out 125 yellow cards and six reds…🤦♂️
TEAM NEWS …Nathan Jones has named an unchanged starting XI.
There is just one change to the squad that beat Cheltenham Town 3-1 in the Carabao Cup first round, with Rob Apter replacing Greg Docherty on the substitutes bench. Will Mannion continues in goal, with Danny McNamara, captain Lloyd Jones, Billy Koumetio and Amari’i Bell making up the back four. Nathaniel Chalobah joins Conor Coventry in central midfield with Tyreece Campbell, Sonny Carey and Karlan Grant playing behind Matty Godden.Apter is joined on the bench by Tiernan Brooks, Ivan Mesík, Collins Sichenje, Joe Rankin-Costello, Alan Mwamba, Harvey Knibbs, Millenic Alli and Miles Leaburn.
Charlton: Mannion; McNamara, Jones (c), Koumetio, Bell; Coventry, Chalobah; Campbell, Carey, Grant; Godden
Subs: Brooks, Mesík, Sichenje, Rankin-Costello, Mwamba, Knibbs, Alli, Apter, Leaburn

"Glad" to see Patrick Agyemang isn't back from injury yet... He terrorised us in both games last season, couldn't handle him

Interesting it's Doc and not JRC that misses out.ForeverAddickted said:No Docherty from the Cheltenham game... Swapped for Apter2 -
Derby fans not rating their starting XI. The type of reaction you’d see from us occasionally last season and then go and win the game (Leicester away, Middlesbrough away…)

Kaminski, Docherty and Kanu the three to make way for Okonkwu, Ouma and the Right Winger?Talal said:

May well be. I'd rather keep Doc but there will be interest in him, possibly unlike JRC.ForeverAddickted said:

Same 11 as last Sat as most predicted.
But only 1 striker on the bench. I thought everyone said we had too many ?

Should be Grant’s 100th competitive appearance for Charlton?6

Kelman is injured, we have enough. And Mbick in reservegolfaddick said:Same 11 as last Sat as most predicted.

Hope Mannion keeps the boo boys quiet 🤞UTFA2

Mbick will be there in time, only recently made his first appearance after a serious injury, shouldn’t rush him back. Sounds like Kelman’s only about 3 weeks away, expect we’ll have 2 on the bench when more are available.golfaddick said:Same 11 as last Sat as most predicted.

Gutted I'm not there today. Annoyingly, just in a pub in Wapping and seen a Derby fan poncing around St Katherine's Dock earlier.0

Would assume the latter. NJ probably wants him to get up to speed and to drill our tactics into him.Chris_from_Sidcup said:Is Ouma injured or just not match fit yet?2 -
