Oh South London…

I’m not trying to start a row here, I promise, but I am interested in CL opinions about the South London chant, given that Nottm Forest have a similar ditty and the club have recently asked fans to stop singing it, due to its misogynist/sexist nature.

https://www.nottinghamforest.co.uk/news/2026/october/17/message-to-supporters--misogynistic-chanting/

I am writing something on Substack about the Forest statement.

I know this has been discussed on here before but attitudes change over the years. Most Forest fans accepted it was dated and offensive, though not all, of course. Many took umbrage at being offered “education” on the topic.

One CL thread on here is mostly complaining about snowflakes being easily offended, much like the Daily Mail comments on the Forest story. But some, women usually but not always, find it pretty disgusting. I think it’s pretty cringe in 2026 and would not want young girls hearing how some people view women. You can argue it’s not about that but unfortunately it’s not a song with a lot of nuance.
Anyway I’d be interested to hear whether thoughts on this chant are still supportive or not, given it’s sung at every game.

@Len\'s_little_girl has never liked it but accepts it as part of the match experience. I don’t join in.

If you really want to put our fans on blast, you'll also mention that they burst into a chorus of 'Stop the boats' at Watford

Who doesn't love a bit of tits, fanny and the Charlton?

It's also plainly wrong, as most of South London is absolutely devoid of crumpet.

"It's full of Tips, Quaggy and Charlton" is much more apt

People take life too seriously. It's just for fun. We'll all be dead soon, and there's nothing past it.
Enjoy your tits, fanny, cocks, dildos and sing about them, why not?

Probably the same people who will say that politics has no place at football, if someone waves a Palestine flag.

The thing I never understood about the song, is that Bermondsey is surely also in South London?

When my kids were considerably younger, we used to sit in the family corner. In front of us was an older kid who always sat with a bloke who I presume was his dad. The kid used to love singing this song. One day he absolutely sang his heart out, at the end he looked up to see his dad's approving smile, only there'd been a change of routine today. What he actually saw was his mum's disapproving glare. The look on both their faces was an absolute picture. I can only imagine the discussion when they got back home.

Do I sing it? No, I'm worried I might see my mum glaring at me.

I’ve always thought it a bit puerile but each to their own. However, I’ve always found the Adams family song really cringe and I’d rather that was stopped than the one suggested.

It’s not particularly a forest or south London “ditty” is it? Virtually every club in the country sings their version.

I would have no objection if all the women in the ground collectively sang their own version:-

    oh South London,
    is wonderful,
    oh South London is wonderful,
it’s full of cocks, bollocks and Charlton,
    oh South London is wonderful.

Perhaps a joint effort referencing the genitalia of both sexes would ensure a more appropriate balance and encourage both male and female participation:-

    oh south London,
    is wonderful,
    oh South London is wonderful,
it’s full of clunge, willies and Charlton,
    oh South London is wonderful.

Personally, I would sing both with gusto if they were adopted. Fingers crossed.

It’s a lie , I grafted my way round the bars and clubs of south London and in my Essex wife’s words , I’m a “failed slag” .
Now that could be down to me being completely pony on the pull or the fact there are no tits or fanny in south London

To be fair, I think that was a bit of tongue in cheek chant aimed at the policeman stood filming the away end for the whole of the first half
