Former Emmerdale actor Ronald Magill, who played pub landlord Amos Brearly, has died at 87, ITV's website has said.

Magill joined the soap when it began in 1972 as Emmerdale Farm, and starred in the role for 19 years. He also returned for a spell in the 1990s.

His character was renowned for running the Woolpack with Henry Wilks, and for his distinctive bushy sideburns.

The actor, who was born in Hull, began his career at the Nottingham Playhouse, and later became its artistic director.
