    That was not a riot, but a march and a demonstration regarding the presentation of a petition to demand the charter - things that included universal manhood suffrage, voting by secret ballot, equal sized constituencies, pay for MPs, annual elections and an end to the need for a property qualification for Parliament. All things that we take for granted, except for annual elections, but that was to make MPs more accountable to the electorate.

    Thanks BFR - sure it must of kicked off somewhere. Anyway point was that May Day was linked to radical causes at least that far back.
