Try this Dave, I have managed to get at least 4 films onto one 2gb memory stick. The software lets you pick the quality. The better the quality the larger the file created and thus the fewer films you can fit. The software converts DVD to MPEG4 files which are created on your hard drive. You then upload them to the PSP via a USB cable.
There are freebie software options but the ones I looked at involved a fair amount of knowledge to use.
Handbrake is also excellent (http://handbrake.m0k.org/). Open source tool with correct settings for lots of formats including PSP.
I use it to rip DVD's for my iPod Touch and it works great.
Good call Dutch, Handbrake is excellent, I use it on the Mac. Great for converting vids for iPods as well if anyone out there needs that. I never really realised there was a Windows version.
