Would we be top if we still had Diawara at the back?

  • oohaah, that's not a maybe for me but a definite. Allowing Curbs to go after he had proved himself over years was bad enough, but then handing that dope Dowie £11 million was a disaster. Then to appoint Uncle Les instead of just asking him to hold the fort was the final straw.

Yes i agree with all that but all of us would never make a mistake if we had the wonderful gift of hindsight.
  • [cite]Posted By: Athletico Charlton[/cite]He had a great game away at Wigan for us I seem to remember...dominant in the air, got his head on all the keepers long punts forwards ;-)

I remember that one...got drenched walking back to the station.
  • Big game away at Chesterfield in the Cup too (won on pens) - if my memory is working.

Diawara (The Gluvna) and Bougherra (Magic) - both playing European footy, combined cost to us was £6.5m (?).

Roughly twice the value of our current squad ?

Uncle Les was asked to hold the fort & was temporary, but we lost a few games & the press was on at us, saying that did the players want to play for him/respect him as he was only temporary. So to give Les more authority they made it permanent, although Les & Richard new it was only temporary until someone more suitable could be found.

One of the worst away games I've ever had the misfortune of going to!

We were an absolute disgrace that day and Diawara was shocking.
  • Diawara who? Never heard of him.
  • remember a night cup game and i was sitting close to the pitch. he was like a lumbering dinosaur and looked seriously out of shape - might have been the game when RM had a pop about him.

[cite]Diawarra wasn't great for us but how many games did he play and he loved a pair of gloves !

Not a pair... he always wore 1!

If you mean by "big game away" that Diawara had a good game that night at Chesterfield then I could not disagree more!!!

They were in League One and we were in the Premiership and they stuck three goals past us and our defending was horrific all night.

They equalised in injury time to send it to penalties with a long ball that our defenders left to each other.

  • Diawara was crap for us because we don't play in the French league. And last night Man Utd didn't take him out of this confort zone.

Wait for the match at Old Trafford. I'm looking forward to seeing how he copes if Man Utd get lots of crosses in the box and play at a high tempo.

Agree 100%, he was totally unsuited to the high tempo of English football, he could not deal with the physicality of the game at all.

His performance at Wigan was atrocious and his "cameo" spell at home to Sheffield United was so bad that it was hard to believe he was a pro player.

I never knew this. Why would Les want to give up his regular coaching job for a temporary managership without a route back?

If a new manager came in he would probably have gone anyway as they usually want to bring in their own team (which was probably why Billy Davies had earlier turned us down, as we tried to insist that Reed was retained as coach).

If Reed had been successful in his temporary role then it could have been made permanent, but that wan't the realistic plan/expectation and as I said he was only made permanent to try and attempt to stop the media undermining him.

Les was never probably suited to management, though everyone agrees he is an excellent coach (Eddie Youds confirmed this last night).
  • Cheers CE.
  • starting at old trafford tonight
  • missed a sitter of a header ..... he always was a bit of a toblerone head
  • wonder if he took his glove(s) in with him?
  • "Nice defender".

  • Best mates with alou Diarra
  • No chance of us being top. The only one player that has ever changed the whole team on his own was Scott Parker, enough said.
  • No offence dickplumb and Covered End, but for me Uncle Les was easy to read, great Coach, nice man, but not for the difficult task of controlling overpaid stroppy footballers. There are no softies succeeding as managers in the Premiership.
  • I thought he was a very good player only let down by the ego that Murray turned into.
  • Was absolutely dog breath for us, so many awful performances. Wigan away, in particular, stands out. No self-respecting defender lets the ball come that far and bounce towards their own goal - pathetic.

For that alone, I hope he at least gets conmunity service..

4 years they've been waiting for you to give your opinions on this Grandpa!
  • It's funny reading the first few posts on this thread that Watford still haven't been promoted.
  • He had some (very) bad games but overall was nowhere near as bad as some make out.

Got better as he got used to the English game. Could have been very good if we'd stayed up.
