Why not, or are you inferring that anyone new to the site isn't allowed to post on a subject that's already been covered in the past? How are they supposed to know if it's been done before or not?
Serious point. I already know of a couple of people who have registered on here but rarely, if ever, post because they feel it's a bit of a closed shop. I tell them that's not the case, but they have obviously got the idea from somewhere.
not inferring that at all. Just this one seems to go down the same natural progression repeatedly. Something about cars, Rothko natters about his bmx, the rest of us normal people slate cyclists etc.
perhaps i'm a bit tooeager to 'steer direction' at times. Fair point, and i hold my hands up if i sometimes get it wrong. Its not intentional, and perhaps i need to step back a bit from that.
We don't have the ability to merge discussions which is a shame as it would take out the problem of repeat subjects. I use the Search function a lot, but i get the impression not many others do.
Its worth remembering though that this is a football site, and primarily a Charlton one at that. The last Charlton discussion was 14 discussions ago for an example. No way would we want it to be football or Charlton only, but equally wouldn't want it where its just a general chit chat site that occassionally has something Charlton related, because i'm convinced that way would make it into a closed shop. Its a fine line, and quite hard to balance, and ultimately dictated by the masses.
Its a real shame to hear anyone say they think of it as a 'closed shop', because that's the opposite of what we would want this to be. Where some people get know each other its easy to fall into a clichy trap, but i think people have been making an effort in the last month or so to eradicate that a bit, particularly the 'minibus' lot, and that's really appreciated. There are equally a lot of people who post on here that don't know others, or 1 or 2 most, and i hope they don't feel alienated in any way.
I rack my brains night and day trying to think of subjects to start that may entice people to reply, sign up, or jog them into action, and make it more 'open house', but i can't force them or anything and i'm seriously running out of starting pieces.
If anyone can think of ways that might encourage others to get involved etc i'd be really grateful to hear views.

What a splendid answer - I take back all of the nasty malicious things I've whispered about you in the pastg AFKA! ;o)
Serious point, do you fancy standing as the fans director when Henry retires? I reckon it's be a landslide if you did.
Go over the speed limit and get get caught, then tough, you broke the law, deal with it, ditto for anyone on any thing jumping red lights, before Ketman or WSS pipe up.
Hate to quote myself, but really Afka and Buckshee you should do better with the digs, as I've already said, jump a red light on a bike, car, etc etc and you deserve to be caught and fined.
Do I do it? Nope, not after seeing someone get hit by a bus doing it about 6 months ago.

I'm finding it harder and harder to be able to decipher when you're being serious and when you're on the rise.... :-)
What's the point in driving cars if you can only go at 20mph.
Cars should be banned from city centres altogether and everyone can ride a bike, or get a ride on a 'taxi-bike.' We'd all get where we want to go quicker, safer, and be fitter and happier.
As I argued in the obesity discussion, changes in society need to be made to bring about such developments. Showers in all workplaces for starters.

now thats the most sensible thing said for a very long time!
[quote][cite]Posted By: buckshee[/cite]what we have to take into account here is that rothko doesn't drive which I personally think is very selfish of him as he also doesn't drink.
how about we fine all the cyclists that go through red lights as well then , no excuse ? and don't tell me you don't do it you lying toad![/quote]
Rothko doesn't drive - that explains his hardline approach. I don't have a car but I can drive (I drive for my job) and I agree with those who say that it's more to make money than for safety. I find myself so worried about going over the limit that I'm constantly looking at my speedometer. I might crash as a result. Very safe. Try driving Rothco and you might see what I mean.

Good job you don't have a car if you are unable to utilise the facilities and drive safely!

another example of a perfect idea in a non- perfect world-
At the mo- i am relocating my office so that i don't drive to work...
How perfect would it be to wake up- leave 10 mins later, get to work- have a shower and get on with the day.
Trouble is that unless you work for a mammoth organisation- aint going to happen, and i certainly, as the owner of a small business can't afford to pay the increased rent/utility costs.

But I drive a car 3 or 4 days a week. It's not my choice. The speed limit changes every 5 minutes on the motorway and it's impossible to keep track. It's done on purpose to catch people.

Shame really, but this is the real world.
I hate all this 'real world' attitude. The real world could have no humanity at all. But it does. And it's for us to make our world. I think the human race has accomplished harder tasks than putting a shower in every workplace to encourage people to cycle. It is, after all, the rain in winter and sweat in summer, that put many people off.
All businesses can afford it, no matter how small they are. The average household is much smaller but we all have showers don't we?
[cite]Posted By: badger[/cite]Just as an after thought the average speed for vehicles driving in london is 11 miles an hour, in Paris it's 19 miles an hour?
11 mph! It's crazy. A century ago we were doing the same speed on horseback!
I repeat. Why not just use bicycles? The world's gone mad.
All businesses can afford it, no matter how small they are. The average household is much smaller but we all have showers don't we?
OK Jimmy. I'm sure your employer would be only too pleased if you gave up any pay rise you might otherwise have been getting so he can put in a few showers that nobody will use.
My personal take on the current course of this thread is that if I lived within realistic cycling distance of my yard I would ride a bike in, fact is I don't. I use a motor vehicle for work purposes funnily enough not for pleasure but on the same token I've managed to get through the last nine years driving safely and soundly both small and very, very large vehicles.
I appreciate with this forum there are those that appear to veer either to the left or to the right as far as the politics of discussions go. And there are a few who decide to go along the common sense route.
As I said earlier in the thread 20 MPH speed limits are fine by me but as long as they are in sensible areas. going however on our countries previous records with enforcing speed limits/fines in this country I would trust a 20MPH camera or trap to be everywhere the likelyhood of catching people would be.
If there were speed traps on every junction of every residential or dangerous area I would have no problem. However when they are on the borders of national limit areas going into a reduced speed on a stretch of road that has little need to do so (bluebell hill for anyone who knows it). I think I have the right to question the logic behind speed cameras/traps.
And as an aside anyone should be free to drive and own a 4X4 as long as they pass some sort of test on they're ability to handle it. Not their right to own it.

No - I think he means he can cycle at 19mph which is coincidentally the same speed that Parisian motorists manage.
