Just supposing Thomas played centre mid...?

edited January 2008 in General Charlton
With Youga giving a storming performance at left back, and Basey contributing a great deal as a left sided midfielder - what do we do with JT?

If we played him in a 4-5-1 in the hole behind the central striker while Reidy is out, he'd be constantly involved, unmarkable/winning free kicks in dangerous positions and given opportunity to jink into the box causing havoc and winning penalties.

As Nolly says - discuss!

Interesting idea. Who would we drop from the centre to accommodate him though?

Sell him and then use the money to buy a decent accomplished centre midfielder

Good shout Oggy, with Reid out. Guess it could only work with 5 in midfield though, so after Saturday, maybe an option for away games? He might love it; a chance just to showboat with little responsibility. Would be interesting to see for a period during a game, even if as a surprise temporary tactic.

Curbs tried it in pre-season of his last year, swopping with Ambrose for the odd 5-10 minutes in a game and the effect was awesome, he scared the sh*t out of defences. Surprised it wasn't used in the season proper.

Right, if Pards leaves, it's me for manager.......(!)

No long ball, lots of flair & skill, full backs bombing on and wonder wingers. JT in attacking midfield ripping the heart out of defences - winning 2 penalties a game, every game - and even a crocked Reid coming on as sub just to take them.

Feast of football - even 'SuperMac' McLeod is a Valley hero!

What about the defence - nah, no probs. We'd always score more than we let in. ;o)

nothing stops him from jinking into the box now but he rarely does it

If we supported Ebsfleet or had £30 in them we'd be able to make decisions like this!

thomas in Centre mid - do me a favour - he can;'t and won't tackle on the wing as it is

No one would expect Thomas to be a ball winning grafter in a 4-4-2.

The idea was to use Thomas (in the absence of Reidy) where he could do the most damage - playing in the hole behind the main striker in a 4-5-1.

Pards recently was bemoaning the loss of 'technical players' like Toddy & Reidy to unlock packed defences.

In Thomas we have a player capable of wreaking havoc by running from central positions at the soft underbelly of defences.

What I'd do with Thomas is sell him, finally had enough of him, too little end product after trying to beat his man at least three times before trying to cross the ball.

This whole thread is premised on Basey's 10 minute cameo on Saturday when he looked ok at left mid - but let's not get overexcited!

Think it's a good idea if purely for the away games. Would you still keep ZZ in the centre? Pards would continue to Holland so maybe Semedo alongside him would compensate a bit more for Jerome's lack of tackling, but then again we might be too defensive.
People keep saying Youga left back, Basey left mid, but could it work the other way around? Basey has performed pretty well so far at left back, Youga has the engine and desire to get forward more. Defensively we'd be sound down that side and i think they could perhaps alternate with their attacking runs. Unlikely to happen though given Youga's solid debut at left back.

hold on Darren Ambrose can play that role and he gets slated for never getting stuck in so how comes Thomas won't.

CAPABLE , has the ability, all words used to often to describe the little show pony who essentially has flattered to deceive most of the time.

probably becomes Jerome has an ounce of pace and a trick or 2 that can confuse defences. Ambrose has nothing. Only once in a blue moon (against his old club) he shows a glimpse of quality.

Whilst, I'm sure, he's on a fair old wedge each week, it's worth remembering that he only cost £100k in the first place...
