But Varney has revealed that the affected supporters could have their sums wrong anyway.

"If the team remains in play-off contention or better, it is likely we will increase the adult matchday ticket price to £25 for the last four home matches," he said.

"That alone could be worth a six-figure sum to the club, when you take into account that the opposition in each case are likely to be well supported."

However, he stressed there are no plans to increase concession or junior prices for the final games. These categories are unaffected by the season-ticket anomaly.
