Danny Murphy has got nothing against Charlton, he says nothing but nice things about the club and the set up, he has a problem with one man...Alan Curbishley, i've heard it from the horses mouth. He was very pro Charlton when I spoke to him. When you hear what actually went on and what we as fans are told it makes you realise that we're told very little.

All i'm saying is Murphy's side of the story is different to anything I was told at the time! Not sure how much I should say on here!

Right basically, what Murphy has to say is...During that Transfer window Curbs' approached him (Murphy never having asked for a move) saying he'd approached Graham Souness (who was at Newcastle) about a swap deal (Murphy to go to Newcastle and Bowyer and I think it was Ambrose to come to Charlton) and Souness was a happy to do the deal. Murphy was happy with the deal as he is a good friend with Souness (liverpool connection) anyway, by all accounts Bowyer wasn't happy to take a wage cut to come to us and it put the brakes on. Anyway Murphy admitted he was disappointed but he said he was more than prepared to get his head down and play for us but according to him Curbs' had a sulk on and told him he was no longer first choice. Then Spurs came in and Curbs' said he couldn't leave but Murphy wanted to go at this time so forced the deal through. It sounds worse than it is here but he really honestly had nothing but nice things to say about the club as a whole, the fans, the players everything. He was very pro Charlton but said Curbs' made it very difficult for him after failing to land Bowyer. Might not be true but its only what he told me.
I'm not anti Curbs' but his record with "bigger" players definately says to me there could have been some truth in it.

Konchesky for sure, Parker I don't like but have a grudging respect for him as after enduring some real shit off us he applauded the covered and and gave a thumbs up. Let's make it clear though I don't like him one jot.

I get the impression Paul Walsh actually hates us. Curbishley always had a shit eating grin on his face last season whenever we lost before going to West Ham, and again I think he saw us purely as a step to his dream job. That's only now he's gone though

Barry Endean - refused to join the former players' association on the basis he didn't want to be reminded. And who can blame him?

Scott Balmer can't stand us. Sweaty Stuart Balmer however is still a big fan.

Yes he does. Worked with Pardew at West Ham as well.

Saw him at a youth cup game and looks fitter and slimmer than he did as a player.

[cite]Posted By:A very complex man and not at all a "typical" footballer. That was a few years ago (Deano just beated his clean sheet record so must have been 2000) so I hope he's come thru it now.

I thought that Deano equalled it?

[cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]Andy Townsend - not an ex-player but his dad was but never mentions it and never seems to have a good word to say about the club.

CAFC aren't alone in that. Whenever Andy Townsend's full career is talked about Weymouth get mentioned but never Welling. Sad considering Welling were the club who put him on the road and he played for and he made 100+ apps for them.

Don Townsend never came to the 50th anniversary of the 7-6 Huddersfield game.

Perhaps something happened behind the scenes that has left him disenchanted with the club.
  • Met Andy Townsend in a bar a few years back.I was a bit leggo so he was a bit wary at first but once I mentioned his dad and Welling he opened up (not his wallet though) and was up for a chat about all things red.Seemed to speak highly of our club.

Its all a bit of a blur though :-)
