[cite]Posted By: jimmymelrose[/cite]There's a lot I could say on this subject, but instead I will just repeat that those who bemoan a lack of correct English should look at themselves.

Admit it Jimmy, you checked that post twice for typo's before clicking the "Add your comments" box, didn't you?
    ;o)

    Yes. I did.

    Ha ha - knew it!
  • Yes, OK, very funny. But on a serious note, I wish others would do the same sometimes. The lack of punctuation is unbelievable at times.
  • With the best will in the world, it ain't gonna happen Jim.

Are/were you a teacher per chance?
  • Yes, I am, but I've resigned. Two more weeks to go.

Blimey, that was a good guess wasn't it. I tell thee, I'm in the wrong game - I should be a mind reader!
  • Oi Jimmy - your surname isn't Italian by any chance is it? - If you're not who I think you are then that won't make any sense to ya :)
  • not in my household guv. i was telling my trouble and dustbin the other day as I was walking down the apples that we gotta keep talking like this to protect our London.
  • I thought we were all from Kent anyway?

Now there's an accent that has totally dissapeared!
  • There's an interesting slot on the Robert Elms show on BBC Radio London (the show is about all things London) with Laura Wright who is a professor of linguistics specialising in London language.

As she points out spellings, pronunciation, dialect, accent and vocabulary in London have been and are in constant change.

Some times for no known reason, sometimes because of other influences such as Irish and Yiddish (think of the all the Yiddish words we use like nosh, kosher and slepp).

And older people always moan about kids not talking proper and slurring their vowels.

If anything the problem is not that the London accent is going but that it is taking over and obliterating the whole of southern England so that people in Norfolk or Southampton have Estuary English accents.

No, I didn't bother to check the punctuation. This is a message board not English class

I started the lack of grammar stroke spelling thread and I know that my use of English is better than average. People generally can’t put a sentence together with the use of a comma, full stop or even a capital at the start. As for paragraphs, you are (you're) having a laugh.

So I have taken a look at myself and can't wait until I'm 27 on Sunday

    Whooooohaaaa

I think there are two issues with the use of grammar on message boards: one is lower standards; the other is the fact that most of us have only learned to type on a computer and some, more by texting than anything else and thus the need to reply speedily leads to silly errors and poor punctuation., e.g:

    1. there, their, and they're - I know the difference but in a hurry will often type "there" instead of "their". "They're" on the other hand I find needs me to engage my brain in thinking about the words I'm typing rather than the ideas I'm putting forward.

    2. Paragraphs - many don't use them. I do but often not with text book correctness but more to make the reading of my posts easier to digest.

    3. "know and "no" - this is a cardinal error made by some (not me) but comes from the texting culture of quick typing.

    4. "Samedo" and "Semedo" - we know who you are, nobody who can make that kind of mistake should be eligible for the Supporters Director role at Smallwall, let alone our club..;-)

    5. Finally the spell check function on here does not work with IE, or Opera (unless there is a "plug in" that somebody can point me at), but does work with Firefox (if you down load the right "plug in"). so get yourself Firefox I say!
  • wot god is a spel chacker 4 gramma tho?
  • my girlfriends daughter says "go a' toilet" which really winds me up.. Sidcupese..

No, because it is a contraction of "china plate" and the plural of plate is plates
  • THis is a message board not a lexicon.

Try geting a degree when you have word blindnes (cant spell dislexisia if you have it !!!!). While you looking after a 40 million pound project at sametime. Its why i laugh at the little peeps who correct my spelling , grama, etc and have yet to do anything or been anywhere !!

The question was "is the london accent slowly dying?" The answer must be yes and no. Its organic and moves with social mobility of the time. 150 years back in the East End it wold have had many more Yiddish words. The whole of the English lauguage is organic and picks up words every day which are not from the old Anglo Saxon. Its the reason long after the English have gone (2015 at my last reaconing) the language called "English" will carry on.

Trping this on a Thai/ English keyboard which is intresting.

  • thats it jimmy pick on the fat kid he aint got no feelings

make ya feel big and cleva do it
  • jimmy has issues.
  • he has Nolly the biggest one is that he has a hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee plum in his gob and criticies everyone on their grammer.most of the time i can't be bovvered to check it never mind tally ho.
  • What on earth are you guys on about? What fat kid?

Besides, I never criticised anyone's grammar - I was talking about punctuation.

You don't need to be 'big and cleva' - you can just use a dash, as I have here, to express a pause (if you don't want to worry about all the other possibilities).
