I think at the top level (World Cup) a full back can often be the most potent attacking force. It is often the only position that can find any space.
At the last world cup I think we really missed out having Carragher at RB. He was defensively sound, but offered nothing going forward. It was perhaps an even bigger crime not taking Luke Young than it was not taking Benty.
[cite]Posted By: JohnBoyUK[/cite]Wenger has been quoted several times as saying he sees Walcott's natural position as a centre forward and as the natural successor to Henry. He's certainly got the pace to be able to play their but then so has the likes of Defoe, Agbonlahor, Bent etc etc. Has he got the natural footballing ability? probably not. However, as Wenger has always said, all footballers NEED to be natural athletes and you can teach the ball skills.
I thought Wenger said players need to learn the technical side first when young, develop physically and then learn the mental side. Not sure older players really can learn the technical side, surely once they're in their 20s there's only so much they can improve.
Walcott isn't a good player yet but when he devleops and can cross he will be quality however he is mainly used as an impact player like we use scott wagstaff.
Bale will never frighten opposition teams as he has no skill but he can still whip in a lovley cross.Oh and he is welsh.
Arron lennon is so overated , he can't cross so shaun wright phillips and james milner are streets ahead of him

FACT
Oh really????
Ignores the fact that Walcott can be described as lightening quick, and Sam has nothing more than decent pace.
Sam isn't like Walcott at all. As someone else said he's more like Wagstaff.

Hasn't Lennon's crossing improved? I can't see how SWP is streets ahead, he's hardly a great crossed himself. Milner surely a very different type of player, he's played CM for Villa.
Lennon's final delivery is miles better than it was two or three years ago. He actually looks up now.
Bale has been in fantastic form recently but his ideal position is wing back. He leaves holes behind him when used as a full back and doesn't have the tricks to be a top wide man. In fact, with three centre backs, you couldn't do any better than Johnson on the right and Bale on the left (for obvious reasons not for England but Benitez might be interested inthe prospect).
Millner has to go because he can play in so many positions. Wide (either side), central, in the hole or as an emergency full back.
I still go back to what I said at the outset and that is that Walcott needs to play through the middle to show his best. By definition, full backs tend to be that bit quicker than centre backs and pace is TW's big strength.
Still think that Bent deserves a chance to play for England but cannot see it happening, I would take Milner, and I think that Walcott will get the nod over Phillips and Lennon. But who knows.....
If I was Walcott I would move on from Arsenal, the guy need's regular football, you cannot be a 'gonna be' for ever........
So not good enough for Arsenal, but good enough for England! Ehm........ sounds about right
I've always rated Walcott. Crap idea taking him to the last world cup but hey that SGE for you!! The guy is an out and out winger that's plain to see. Yeah he needs to improve but I wouldn't say Lennon is "the finished player" yet either. Is he better than bentley? SWP? In my opinion he will contribute more than them in a world cup. Should Walcott go to the world cup? Yes
