it's holland v italy in the wankdorf (snigger) stadium, switzerland. not an englishman in sight and the stadium announcer announces "there will be one minute added time" in english?0 -

i though that the defender off the pitch was still active as i think you need permission to leave the field aswell as come back onto the field, therefore playing van nist onside.

That would be how I read it, but congrats to RVN for realising that and not falling back into a conventional on-side position.
Should be an interesting second half, especially if Italy pull a goal back quickly. Holland do like to self-combust.0 -

pleat watching the replay of the first goal said 'the keeper(buffon) does well ' when he punched the ball back into the danger area rather than pushing it away for a corner or towards the sidelines and the dutch scored , he really can't be that stupid can he0

Spot on Paul, it's number 7 on the list of cautionable offenses.
A player is cautioned and shown the yellow card if he commits any of the following seven offences:
1. is guilty of unsporting behaviour
2. shows dissent by word or action
3. persistently infringes the Laws of the Game
4. delays the restart of play
5. fails to respect the required distance when play is restarted with a corner kick or free kick or throw-in
6.enters or re-enters the field of play without the permission of the referee
7. deliberately leaves the field of play without the permission of the referee0 -

the point i think makes it on-side is that he (defender) was still active.
if the ball was trickling towards the goal-line and he had a chance of clearing it, he would've recovered from the 'crash' to try to clear it.
if he was hurt the ref has the authority to stop the game.
i don't know whether he needed treatment before the restart, but if he didn't i can't think of an arguement to let the goal stand*

great football, Holland are my team for no particular reason before this game. Re the offside, Nistelroy was onside until the player left the pitch if that helps, must admit I thought it was offside, but I guess the rule it to stop players leaving the pitch intentionally in order to make people offside. Enjoying these finals so far and we don't have to worry about England or our 'fans'0

Although he didn't show it last night i think he's one of the top 4-5 strikers in the world. Scored over 30 goals in Serie A a couple of years back and hit 39 for Bayern last season.0 -

He definitely needed some support. I'd expect Del piero or Cassano to partner him in their next game.0
