Yeah, doing the same as a lot of others and listening to a fair bit tonight. A lot of what I got to hear was 2nd hand, does anyone else remember seeing a glam rock band called Sexagisma who used to play at Thames Poly loads around 81-83? They used to cover loads of Bowie's 70s stuff complete with platform heels and feather boas. The first stuff I remember actually being released when I was paying attention was Scary Monsters. So...
1. Ashes to Ashes - bleak, groundbreaking, ahead of its time 2. Space Oddity - love the idea that a pop song can tell a story that's more than just a boy-meets-girl type narrative. 3. Life on Mars - how many extra-planetary songs can one man do? And like all his stuff it's not really about what it says it is. 4. Scary monsters - gone all psychedelic 5. John, I'm Only Dancing (both versions) - OK I know that's greedy, but how many other artists do a version of their own song that is totally original? I like both the rock n roll one and the soulful ballad one.
I have to admit to not having followed what he's been doing musically for the last 20 or so years. I liked Under PRessure and Absolute Beginners, but my musical choices shifted around 1987 and what I heard later didn't inspire. Seems I may be very wrong in my assumption that he'd nothing else new to offer so I will seek out the last 2 albums and give them a listen.
His death is so beautiful and yet so tragic. Blackstar and particularly Lazarus are so eerily beautiful listening to them now, it's like he's made the ultimate artistic sacrifice when he knew his time was up. You never know how these things will affect you until they happen. I've become so much more grateful for everything that he's ever done, right down to playing a character in spongebob squarepants. The man.
