  • The Jam were a brilliant live band, saw them a few times, including once at Croydon Greyhound when the aircon failed and came out completely soaked in sweat. Never really been a fan of his stuff since, although there's been a few reasonable songs.

    For me, it would be:

Life from a window – I love this track, pity they didn’t play it live more often

Down in the Tube Station at Midnight – they smelt of pubs and wormwood scrubs

In the City – angry, short, and brilliant – I wanna tell ya, about the young ideas

The Eton Rifles – Sup up your beer and collect your fags

This is the modern world – I’ve learned more than you’ll ever know
  • No particular order:

    Down In the TubeStation...
    Smithers Jones

  • Never got the fuss. Nice guy, some good songs, but the hero worship that some have? In fairness I may have been put off by all the yobs at school loving the Jam and being too stupid to get the message.

    Great thread:

    1. That's Entertainment
    2. Town Called Malice

    3. Aspects (Love some of his recent work. Saw an interview recently where he said that he felt this track was his best piece of work. He wrote it in short order, said he didn't initially know what it was about, then suddenly realised it was about his wife - brilliant).

    4. Brand New Start
    5. Broken Stones

The Whole Point Of No Return

  • Down in the tube station
    Butterfly collector
    Long hot summer

  • Blimey only 5 from my absolute idol

    Tube station
    Changing Man

  • Far too many for an actual top 5. Today's list is:

    The Place I love
    Speak Like A Child
    Long Hot Summer
    Woodcutters Son
    Sweet Pea, My Sweet Pea
  • I was a teenager during britpop, so Weller was always cited as an influence by the likes of Oasis, and saw him live a few times, especially in the late 90s, early 0s. He's amazing live. Can't pick 5 but probably from wildwood/Stanley road/heavy soul era. Didn't get into the Jam until later, but can definitely see what the fuss is about
  • Being born in 1970 I was just a few years too young to get the Jam until a few years after they split up.

Will never happen, but would love to see a reunion tour.
  • Paul Weller was at the Radical Club in Plumstead today (back tomorrow I'm told but the club is closed) filming a drama for Sky called "A Town Called Malice".

    Gangster show.

    Nice earner for the club

The cast for new Sky crime thriller A Town Called Malice has been announced.

The eight-part series will star Jack Rowan (Noughts + Crosses), Tahirah Sharif (The Tower), Dougray Scott (Crime), Jason Flemyng (Pennyworth) and Martha Plimpton (Younger).

The explosive family drama is set amongst the sunny backdrop of Costa del Sol in the early 80’s, with a decade-defining soundtrack to accompany the series.

The series follows the Lord family, who are a group of petty thieves from South London who swap London for Spain to cash in on an unexpected windfall and escape the police who have questions about a high-profile murder enquiry.

The head of the Lord family is Albert Lord (Jason Flemyng), joined by Mint Ma (Martha Plimpton), youngest son Gene Lord (Jack Rowan) and his girlfriend Cindy Carter (Tahirah Sharif).

The wider family members include Uncle Tony (Dougray Scott), Leonard Lord (Lex Shrapnel), Kelly Lord (Daniel Sharman), Anthony Lord (George Jaques) and Carly Lord (Eliza Butterworth).

Gene is often overlooked as the youngest son but is very smart and, after narrowly surviving a gangland battle, he flees to Spain with his daring fiancé Cindy.

With trouble following the two like night follows day, the couple soon find themselves caught up in the local underworld.

The rest of the Lord family also decide to relocate to the Costa del Sol and see it as a golden opportunity to bring back some of their former glory.

However, this clashes with Gene and Cindy’s plan and they do not want to get caught up in the family drama.

A Town Called Malice will air next year on Sky Max and NOW TV.

  • Away from the numbers
    Dreamtime
    Eton Rifles
    My ever changing moods
    Going my way
  • Hard to choose 5 but Beat Surrender would be in there.
  • All of mine are from The Style Council

    Long hot Summer
    Walls come tumbling Down
    Speak like a Child
    My ever changing moods
    Shout to the top

I'm with you on this 5. The Jam and solo work never did it for me
